But one group of literature fans have made the leap by starting their reading group in somewhere a little more contemporary – the pub.

The Bruery in Dunfermline is the home for a new group who get together monthly for discussions and readings over a glass or two.

For Natalie Rooney, it’s been a fantastic way of meeting like-minded bookworms and she said, “We posted on Facebook to a group of local mums to see if anybody wanted to have a book club in the first place.

“For the venue, we got some ideas from the rest of the group and we knew the Bruery had a little room at the back that would be ideal.

“The bar have been great and they let us use the room for free on the last Sunday of every month.

“It’s central and people do enjoy a wee glass of wine.

“People enjoy the social aspect to the group as well as the book discussions.” Now in its sixth month, the group advertises itself as an open, relaxed place to talk about all things book-related.

There’s no genre off limits as subjects range from classic literature to more contemporary novels and 'chick-lit’ titles.

Natalie explained, “There’s a bit of a mix as to what we’ll read.

“Everybody, when we first started, put in a suggestion and we drew the titles out of a hat at random.

“There’s a real mix of classics and some of the girls like chic literature.

“We’re reading 'The Enchanted’ by Rene Denfeld at the moment and I, personally, have enjoyed it.

“Our favourite book so far has been 'The Handmaid’s Tale’ by Margaret Atwood and this month’s book chosen from the hat is 'A Widow for One Year’ by John Irving.” The group is still relatively young but Natalie hopes that, once word spreads, the numbers will expand.

“We started off as all mums and we’ve recently advertised in the local library and got a new member from that,” she said.

“We have about 20 members of the group at the moment, with about nine or 10 coming to the meetings.

“We’re trying to diversify as we move forward and we probably want it to be bigger and it would be nice if there were more.

“I think there’s probably a lot of people out there who want to be part of the group so it’s about spreading the word at the moment.” So whether you’re mad about Martin Amis or it’s 'Little Women’ you love, this new group at The Bruery on Canmore Street could be the one for you.

The bar is part of the De Brus Brewery, which features a number of themed evenings, like live music and beer tasting.

The Bruery book club meets on the final Sunday of every month at 7.30pm and can be found on Facebook as Dunfermline Book Banter.
