INVERKEITHING bakers rose to the occasion and whisked up a bevy of baked goods for an upper-crust event on Sunday.

The inaugural Inverkeithing Food Group Bake-Off, held at the Friary, attracted around 25 entrants, whose mouthwatering offerings included cakes, fruit loaves and gingerbread.

The bake-off was judged by Holyrood hopeful Annabelle Ewing, with Andrew Hobden's orange cake taking the biscuit.

Inverkeithing Food Group chair Ruth Lockier said the bake-off had been “an amazing success”.

She smiled: “We wanted to try and encourage people, no matter whether they were top-class bakers or had never baked before, to bring along a favourite recipe.

“There were no rules or regulations – we had scones, muffins, pancakes – which made Annabelle's job that wee bit more difficult.

“Everyone really enjoyed it and had the chance to have some cake with a cup of tea or coffee. There was very little left at the end of the day!”

The bake-off was such a hit that a similar harvest-time event is being planned for later this year.

Ruth also highlighted the work being carried out with the Inverkeithing Food Group Juniors, who have planted a variety of seeds, and will plan a menu, serving up what they've grown.

Speaking after the bake-off, Ms Ewing said: “It was a real pleasure to attend the inaugural Great Inverkeithing Bake Off.

“All the cakes, muffins, scones, pancakes, gingerbreads and other baked goods were absolutely fantastic and the competition was stiffer than the peaks of a well-whipped meringue mix.

“I was delighted to be invited to judge the competition which meant of course that I had to taste every one of them. It was a tough job but somebody had to do it!

“Congratulations to Andrew Hobden, whose delicious orange cake won on the day and a massive well done to the Inverkeithing Food Group for their enthusiasm and determination to make their community the best it can be and the way in which they encouraged young children and adults alike to get involved.”
