LIMBER up, Inverkeithing, and make a dash for the Lammas Races tomorrow!

The races are held as part of the town's annual Lammas Fair, which has its roots in medieval times, and will feature eight events in various age groups for the royal burgh's kids and adults alike.

There will be junior races in the boys' and girls' categories for those aged six and under; seven to nine; and 10 to 14, with winners receiving medals.

Richer pickings are to be had in the Ladies' Lammas Race, and the premier Hat and Ribbon Race – both open to those aged 15 and over – with trophies and vouchers of £50, £30 and £20 for the top three places.

Inverkeithing Community Council organises the races, and this year's main sponsors are Plumbstore, based in Belleknowes industrial estate.

The races will take place amid the fun and gaiety of the Lammas Fair, which starts today (Thursday) on the High Street.

Community council chair Helen Doig encouraged residents to take part and come along to enjoy a fun-filled family evening.

She said: “It's for the family – we don't have a gala in Inverkeithing any more and it gives the children an opportunity to race.

“We're hoping for good weather and sunshine, and that everybody enjoys themselves, as it's meant for everyone.

“We want as many men and women as possible to take part in the Hat and Ribbon and the Ladies' Lammas races.”

The evening kicks off with a parade from the Town House in Townhall Street at 6.40pm, led by the Royal Burgh of Inverkeithing Pipe Band and Darrian Wilson, from the 68th Inverkeithing Scouts, carrying the halberd and the hat and ribbon.

The races will start at 7pm near St Peter's RC Church, followed by the prize-giving and reception – laid on by the Inverkeithing Food Group – at the Civic Centre.

To take part, just turn up. Runners must be resident in Inverkeithing and of amateur status.
