GET your running shoes on, Inverkeithing – the Lammas Races are on tomorrow (Friday)!

The races, held as part of the town’s annual Lammas Fair, which has its roots in medieval times, will feature eight events in various age groups for kids and adults.

There will be junior races of separate boys’ and girls’ categories for those aged six and under, seven to nine, and 10 to 14, with winners receiving medals and trophies.

Richer pickings are to be had in the Hat and Ribbon and Ladies’ Lammas races – contested by those aged 15 and over – with prizes of £50, £30 and £20 for the top three placings.

Inverkeithing Community Council organises the races, and this year’s main sponsors are D&G Autocare.

Community council member Myrna Venters encouraged residents – especially the adults – to come along for a “great family evening out”.

She said, “It’s a get-together for Inverkeithing, which is absolutely fabulous, but we need more men and women to run in the Hat and Ribbon and Ladies’ Lammas races.

“We always see people come together for the event and support it extremely well.

“It’s well run and the pipe band gets to show who they are in Inverkeithing as well.

“Everybody looks forward to it, and it’s something special with the Highland Games the next day.

“It’s a community event and with the shows arriving today (Thursday) in the High Street, there’s a great atmosphere.” Guests of honour at tomorrow’s event are the Lord Lieutenant of Fife, Margaret Dean, and depute provost Kay Morrison.

The evening kicks off with a parade from the Town House in Townhall Street at 6.45pm.

It will be led by the Royal Burgh of Inverkeithing Pipe Band while Michael Dunster of the 1st Inverkeithing Boys’ Brigade will carry the traditional halberd and the famed hat and ribbon.

The races will be held at 7pm, along Hope Street, followed by a prize-giving and reception in the civic centre.

To take part, just turn up. Runners must be residents of Inverkeithing and of amateur status.
