STAFF and customers at the Mary’s Meals charity shop in Inverkeithing have been celebrating their 10th anniversary by inviting local residents in for a slice of birthday cake.

The popular shop on the High Street was opened in 2004 by Bridie Burns and her husband, Alexander, and while Alexander has had to give up volunteering due to ill health, Bridie continues to staff the store a decade after she opened its doors.

Bridie told the Press, “It was a really, really good day. We had a refreshment booth out for the customers and we would hope to stay open for another 10 years if possible.

"The shop is very popular in the area and provides a real need in Inverkeithing, not just for people coming in to have a browse and make purchases but also for lonely people to come in and have a chat.” The key vision of Mary’s Meals is to provide a daily meal in place of education to some of the world’s most impoverished children.

The charity was founded in 2002 having grown out of a group called Scottish International Relief and today feeds more than 850,000 children every day in 13 countries around the globe.
