AN INVERKEITHING woman did a charity abseil to raise money in memory of her gran – and then accepted a surprise proposal!

Amy Montgomery (25), of High Street, thought she was just taking part in the fund-raising challenge on the Forth Bridge last Sunday for Multiple Sclerosis Society Scotland after her gran died from the disease five years ago.

But when she reached the bottom, boyfriend Kris Fotheringham (29) surprised her by getting down on one knee and popping the question!

“I had no idea!” she said. “It went so well, it was absolutely brilliant.

“I was overwhelmed. I knew Kris was going to be at the bottom and when I got down and got the ropes off I saw him walk towards me and get down on one knee. It was just amazing.

“The fact that he did it then made it feel like my gran was there too, it made it really special.

“As soon as I got off the beach I burst out crying! It was so lovely, all of my friends and family were there screaming and shouting!

My mum had got decorated glasses with our names on and we had a bottle of champagne.

“I was so tired by the end of it that I went for a nap when I got home!” In April, the Press told you how Amy set her sights on the charity abseil to raise money for MS Society Scotland after her gran passed away.

“My gran had MS since I was born,” she said at the time. “As I grew up I watched her get worse. I remember her walking using her frame, then it was a wheelchair. It got so bad that my grandad couldn’t cope and she went into a home. We all visited her but towards the end it got quite sad and sometimes she didn’t remember my name. She just totally deteriorated.

“It’s such a horrible disease so it’s a cause quite close to my heart.” Now, Amy is delighted that she managed to do something special for the charity. “I raised around £1050 and my employer, Barclays, will match that so it will be over £2000 in total,” she said. “It felt really good to raise that much money.

“The abseil was amazing, I really enjoyed it. Climbing over the side was a bit tense and letting go of the bridge! But it was good fun.” After the adrenaline of the fund-raising challenge and the excitement of getting engaged, all that’s left for Amy is to make a start on planning the wedding.

“Actually, I’ve started already!” she admitted. “I’ve booked a viewing for a venue next week!”
