More than 5000 people turned out for the town’s biggest social event of the year, with Highland dancing, heavyweight competitions, piping, track, field and cycling events, Active Schools children’s Highland games, tug-of-war and children’s races on offer.

There were also games, inflatables, community stalls and tents offering a range of crafts and services, plus plenty of refreshments on offer.

Visitors came from as far afield as the USA, Europe and even Asia, with the Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band (Malaysian Sikh Band) and the Royal Guard of Oman Pipe Band adding plenty of colour.

Games publicity convener Hank John said, “We were extremely pleased with the turnout, which was well over 5000.

“The weather helped and it stayed dry – for a lot of people it was just right and there was no heat to cause exhaustion!

“Just as we finished and wound everything up, there was a little drizzle, but it was a wonderful day.

“It was fantastic to see the good spirits and support for the events taking place throughout the day.” Games history was also created by the Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band, which became the first Malaysian band to play at the event.

Pipe major Harvinder Singh said, “We’re 10,000km away from the piping world so this trip has been a huge experience.

“We’ve really enjoyed the warmth of the people here and how open they are to us – everybody wants to talk to us and find out more.”
