VAMPIRE WEEKEND – Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa

Vampire Weekend is a band who write refined, humorous and inspiring ditties without seeming to break sweat. Everything here is in its right place, and the single is so economical that it should be used as an example of how families on a budget can stay in control during these lean times. You"d do yourself no harm getting hold of the debut album - watch it rise to the top three of every music mag"s end of year lists. The only band who can name-check creative maverick Peter Gabriel in the lyrics without sounding sycophantic.

SANTOGOLD – Lights Out

A sign of a good song, I find, is when you think 'I"m sure I"ve heard this somewhere before'. But I"ve searched extensively through i-Tunes and all my Now That"s What I Call Music compilations to no avail. Keith Richards once said that all great songs are just floating in the ether waiting for songwriters to pluck them from the sky and I think that"s what may have happened here. I"ve been humming this song in my inimitable/irritating falsetto all day. For those of you discerning enough to attend the Hydro Connect Festival at Loch Fyne this weekend, get yourself to the Oyster stage and report back to me on Monday.

THE FRATELLIS - Look Out Sunshine

I once saw Jon Fratelli at a Christmas screening of It"s A Wonderful Life in a Glasgow cinema. Most of the audience were looking at him rather than the black and white saccharine sentiment on screen. That"s the thing about the Fratelli"s – Jon"s star quality (voice and looks) distracts from a decent and hummable enough single. It sounds fairly formulaic, but listen to that voice! The guitar solo"s so-so, but I bet he"s throwing some awesome shapes! Hot damn, I better just sit on the fence with this one. Ps My sister may have wrote this.
