A WEST FIFE primary has been named the best local school in Fife.

And broadcaster Shareen Nanjiani was on hand at a swish Oscar-like ceremony in Glenrothes to hand over a trophy to Townhill School headteacher Mrs Christine Pirouet and depute Mrs Janine Bunyan.

Mrs Pirouet, who has been head for just over four years, said, 'It was a great night done in true Oscars format.'

The school was nominated by a parent and her family and fought off competition from two other schools on the short-list to secure the prize.

The headteacher added, 'The school was recognised as outstanding by the panel and was acknowledged within the community as working hard for the benefit of pupils.

'They also recognised our sporting achievements and our choir"s success after we won the National Saltire competition and others over the years to take learning beyond the classroom.'

Townhill Primary has nearly 10 sports clubs, including gymnastics, swimming, athletics, cricket and football.

The night, held last Thursday, was part of a Local Heroes award scheme for Fife.

Mrs Pirouet added, 'It was a surprise to us because we did not realise we were nominated.

"It"s recognition for the pupils, parents and staff who all work together, so we"re really proud of this.

"To us it"s a major achievement and shows what a fantastic school Townhill Primary is.'

The competition was organised by a radio station and the winner was chosen by a panel of seven judges.
