A DONATION page has been set up for the residents of Walter Hay Court in Rosyth affected by the fatal fire on Friday morning.

Emergency services raced to the sheltered housing complex at 10.00am on Friday to tackle the blaze, with the Press understanding an elderly man lost his life in the fire.

A JustGiving page was created in the hopes of raising £600 in order to buy Christmas hampers for the residents living at the facility.

That target has already been surpassed through 39 contributors at the time of writing.

The hampers are now expected to be given to residents by Friday.

The crowdfunder was organised by Carolann Philp, 35, from Rosyth.

She said: “I’m absolutely overwhelmed that people have been so generous.

“I never expected to make the target so quickly – people have really rallied round to help.

“I’ve been a Rosyth resident all my life and the fire has shocked the community.

“We want to ensure each resident knows that they are thought of at Christmas.”

Tesco in Rosyth has donated groceries worth £100, while a donation tin has been set up at the Yellow Café in Unwin Avenue.

Local councillor Sharon Wilson added: "Carolann contacted me wanting to do something for residents. I then got in touch Stuart Miller, community manager at Tesco, with the idea of a hamper for every resident.

“The tenants have been through a very traumatic experience and we wanted to let them all know that their community is thinking of them.

“The fast response to Carolann’s Just Giving page shows that our faith in the good folk of Rosyth was not misplaced."

Dunfermline and West Fife MP Douglas Chapman thanked Carolann for her efforts.

He said: “Well done to Carolann for this thoughtful festive campaign and for everyone who donated funds, leading to the £600 target being reached in just one day.

“Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the resident who tragically lost their life in the major house fire on Friday.”

An investigation into the incident was underway on Friday evening and into Saturday.

Four fire appliances were called to the scene as well as one ambulance and five police vehicles.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said:  “Police in Fife are investigating following a fatal fire at an address in Walter Hay Court, Rosyth.

“The incident happened around 10am on Friday, December 16, when a fire was reported.  Police and emergency services attended, however a body was found within the property.

“Police are currently undertaking a joint examination of the circumstances with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.  A report will be sent the Procurator Fiscal.”
