ORGANISERS of this year’s PKD Festival were given a boost this week when they landed £10,000 of lottery funding.

The cash will go towards paying for the stage and outgoings such as security staff for the festival, which will take place at the Rosyth Civil Services Club this year.

One of the event’s organisers, Mark Bennett, was delighted with the additional cash.

“It is brilliant,” he told the Press. “It makes a dent in what we pay out. It doesn’t cover it as it costs a fortune to put this on but it makes a nice dent.

“It means more money will be going to charity. At the end of the day, the more donations and the more sponsorship, the more we can give back to the community of Rosyth.”

As well as possible plans to use some of the funds raised to set up a music trust fund to help pay for musical instruments for those who can’t afford them, Mark said they would also be considering putting some proceeds towards youth facilities in the town.

“We will maybe do some kind of annual funding towards a youth club for that area in light of what happened at St John’s Church and what has happened at the school which is literally just over the road from where we are holding the PKD Festival.

“Kids have nothing to do. There is a chip shop there for them to hang around but everywhere they used to go has shut down.”

Since starting in 2008 as a simple homemade go-kart event which was known as the Push Kart Derby, the event has grown.

Last year’s festival at Dalgety Bay Sports and Leisure Club saw a sell-out 5,000-strong crowd turn up for a family-friendly day of music, motors, food and fun.

This year’s promises to be the biggest yet with the line-up including nineties pop stars Atomic Kitten, S Club, A1 and B*Witched.

Others performing include Owen Paul, former Voice of Fife winner Dionne Hickey, Dorja and Blue Delta.

As well as the change in venue allowing festival-goers the chance of camping, a special street market is also going to be held outside the venue which local businesses are being invited to purchase a stall.

“We are looking to have a proper Saturday market and we are looking for people who want to be part of this,” added Mark.

“We don’t mind if these are professional stallholders or what. We are a charity so we will charge for it so it may not be for everyone.”
