TEMPERATURES of minus six didn’t stop one group of West Fife volunteer youth workers from completing a massive charity effort.

The group of 14 young people from the South West Fife youth hub raised a total of £1,700 when they took part in the world’s largest ever sleepout in Princes Street Gardens.

Community education worker Corinne McGinley was delighted with their achievements.

“We decided as a group we would like to take part and set aside four weeks before to raise money,” she explained. “We set a target of £400 and raised £1,700 altogether.

“It went really well. There was not a moan from them and there was a realisation of what people go through.

“Around half of the group have experienced homelessness but not on a rough sleeping level but it could so easily have been them. They felt they were making a difference.”

The group had been given sleeping bags from Lochore Meadows which proved vital. Corinne said: “It was a great achievement. They do volunteering with us and some of them are doing an accreditation for achievement awards so it will also go towards this.”
