CELEBRATE the new by remembering the old with heritage walks in Dunfermline and Rosyth.

You can even double up, blow away the cobwebs and take your first foot with New Year strolls on both January 2 and 3.

After 30 years of organising the New Year historical walk around Dunfermline, Jack Pryde has recruited some 'apprentices' from Fife College to help out on Tuesday January 2.

Adele Bradford and Keith Wallace are currently studying travel and tourism studies and the practical experience of being a guide should help their job prospects.

Jack said: “Getting on the career ladder is difficult for young people nowadays and having work experience and an insight into what tourists actually want can certainly help.

"I have been organising the New Year walk for the past 30 years and thought that I would benefit from some new blood in the business and that it would be a great project for the students to get their teeth into.”

Audrey White, travel and tourism tutor at Fife College, said: “The students have really risen to the challenge of researching Dunfermline’s history, training with Jack to learn how to ensure that tourists enjoy the event and seeing how the theory works in practice. "Jack has a wealth of experience with Scottish, UK and overseas visitors that the students are benefiting from.”

The historical walk is a popular fixture in the festive calendar, hosting around 200 people each year, many of whom come from overseas. Others attend as a tradition to meet old friends.

Jack and his team of guides provide historical information, anecdotes and their interpretation of events as the walk passes through the town.

The walk starts at 1.30pm at the Mercat Cross in Dunfermline High Street and passes the new Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries, the Abbey and Pittencrieff Park.

It concludes at Fire Station Creative where hot drinks and refreshments will be on sale.

The walk is free to attend but places should be reserved by collecting a free ticket from Sew, Yarn, Crafty on the High Street or at Fire Station Creative.

The Rosyth Garden City Association hold their New Year heritage walk at 11am on Wednesday January 3.

The meeting place is Rosyth Parish Church and the event will last about an hour, with a route taking in Backmarch Road, Castle Road, Granville Way, heath Road, Admiralty Road and Queensferry Road, finishing back at the church for refreshments.
