A BRAVE sailor has been recognised after his decisive action helped save a Navy vessel from danger in West Fife waters.

On 5th December last year, Chief Petty Officer Craig Gregory was on board the HMS Archer, a Royal Navy P2000 patrol boat, which was in the Rosyth basin for repairs to her starboard engine.

However, during a stormy morning – with winds gusting over 80mph – CPO Gregory discovered that the pontoon to which HMS Archer was berthed had detached from the jetty.

He quickly realised the danger the ship was in, and took action to prevent it from drifting dangerously in the basin or become grounded on rocks.

Showing great boat skills, CPO Gregory manoeuvred HMS Archer – on the port engine only – against the jetty’s terminal dolphins, to give crew time to get lines attached and secure the vessel again.

For his bravery and quick-thinking, he’s been presented with the Safe Guardian Award by Admiral Ian Jess, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Support).

Admiral Jess said, “I commend Chief Gregory for his positive, risk-based action which was a decisive factor in preventing significant damage or even loss of the ship.

“Chief Gregory secured the ship – a significant achievement when under pressure.”
