SELFISH drivers are parking indiscriminately in Parkgate in Rosyth – despite spaces being available in a nearby street and community centre.

Motorists are even leaving their cars on the footways, although there is plenty of parking at Queensferry Road and the Parkgate Community Centre.

The drivers are also abusing the single yellow line prohibitions on waiting between 7.30am and 6pm Monday to Saturday.

To clamp down on the offences, double yellow lines will now go in on Parkgate, on a stretch between Queensferry Road and the west side of the community centre.

Lay-bys will also be introduced to provide parking directly outside the shops, but will be restricted to 20 minutes, and three disabled spaces will be allocated near the junction of Queensferry Road.

In a report to councillors, technician engineer Scott Blyth stated, “Concerns have been raised in relation to parked vehicles obscuring sightlines and causing an obstruction for safe movement at the junction.

“Despite a high volume of parking being available within close proximity to Parkgate, many drivers choose to park indiscriminately on the road and footways in the area.

“Video surveys indicate that there is available space throughout the day on Queensferry Road and within the Parkgate Community Centre car park.

“These surveys also picked up on a number of dangerous vehicle manoeuvres which put pedestrians at risk.

“Parking restrictions are already in place along Parkgate, however, there is a high level of abuse.” The report recommended changing the restrictions from single to double yellow lines.

It added, “Lack of driver understanding of single yellow line restrictions results in more abuse than with double yellow lines.” The work is expected to cost £2000.
