A TERRIFIED mum is at her wits’ end after finding her daredevil five-year-old perched on the roof of the three-storey building of her Rosyth flat.

Wendy Geddes, who lives at Ramsay Place, is terrified that her son will fall to his death unless something is done about the building’s ladder-like wooden slats which he has taken to climbing.

Owen Allan and his eight-year-old brother, Kian, often play at the grassy area next to the block of flats but Wendy was shocked to go outside one day and find Owen sitting on the roof after he scaled the wooden slats that connect the outer buildings with an airing area.

“He was just sitting there with his legs dangling off the top of the roof,” she said. “When we got him down we asked what he was doing up there and he said he wanted to be like Spiderman and backflip off.

“I’ve seen a few other kids climbing up, though not as high, and I’ve had to shout at them to get down because it’s dangerous.

“A couple of his friends have been doing it too, they’ve got no fear. But if he falls from that height he’ll kill himself.

"Especially with the weather getting worse now, there’s more chance he might slip and fall.” The first time Wendy caught Spiderman fan Owen climbing around on the lower part of the slats, she pulled him inside to tell him not to do it again.

But after finding him on the roof, she grounded him and went to Fife Council to ask for their help.

“I can’t keep him under lock and key but I can’t keep an eye on him every second either,” said Wendy.

“If I’m outside watching him play and have to go inside for something I worry I’ll find him back up there.

"I went to the council first thing the day after I caught him on the roof. I just want them to put something in place to cover the gaps so he can’t put his feet in to climb up.

"They could put something like chicken wire over the bottom section, or maybe vertical slats instead of it being sideways like a ladder.” However, the council pointed out that the wooden slats were a feature of many properties and there had been no other complaints from other residents.

Jan Halley, lead officer (access and support), said, “Recently, officers visited the property to investigate the complaint.

"These wooden slats are a design feature on many of the properties in this area and enclose the drying area for the flats.

“Ms Geddes has been advised not to allow her child to climb up the outside of the flats.”
