"The most iconic section" of HMS Prince of Wales has been under construction on the Clyde by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance since December 2013 and arrived in Rosyth today (Monday) after being towed around the south coast of the UK by barge since 24th April.

Known as Upper Block 07, the Forward Island is where the carrier will be commanded atop the flight deck, containing the bridge and approximately 100 vital mission systems and compartments.

The Queen Elizabeth Class carriers are the first to use an innovative design of two islands that are both designed with the ability to incorporate the other's role in an emergency, increasing the survivability of the ship.

Both HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Queen Elizabeth are being delivered by the Aircraft Carrier Alliance, a unique partnering relationship between BAE Systems, Thales UK, Babcock and the Ministry of Defence.

The 65,000 tonne carriers will provide the armed forces with a four-acre military operating base which can be deployed worldwide, and will be versatile enough to be used for operations ranging from supporting war efforts to providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief.
