A DUNFERMLINE dance instructor is being inundated with requests from West Fife women after starting a seemingly risqué new fitness class - pole dancing.

Laura McFadden (26), of Drum Road, is now planning to begin a third class after her first weekly session, held at The Dance Studio, Lynburn Industrial Estate, proved so popular she did not have the space to accommodate everyone.

Laura, who has an HND in professional stage dance, said, 'I just put the word out and it filled up.

'We were planning to take on 15 people per class but 20 people said they wanted to come.'

She"s beginning a new class this week and when that fills up she"ll start a waiting list for a Friday evening class as well.

And she puts pole dancing"s popularity down to providing women with confidence in a friendly, fun-filled environment.

Laura explained, 'A lot of woman go to exercise classes to get fit but you don"t really gain confidence in an aerobics class, whereas here they are getting the chance to know their own body but also work hard.

'We didn"t just want a class of teenagers or early-20s skinny things.

"We have some pretty girls with their fake tan on but we"ve also got people of different shapes and sizes, which is really good to see.

'I"ve never laughed so much in a class in my entire life, it"s so enjoyable.'

Pole dancing can burn as much as 250 calories, similar to the amount used in a gym session.

But despite its salacious origins, the class focus is on fitness rather than erotic posing.

'We"re not wearing high heels - I wouldn"t allow heels on my real wood floor!' she laughed.

'We"re just wearing sports gear and there is nothing sleazy about it.

'A lot of people might think that because we run a pole dance class we"re churning out girls to work in a strip bar up the town.

'Some of the girls have partners. A woman in my pilates class who is in her 30s is booking a Tuesday session. She told her husband and he said, "On ye go".'

The class is run by pole dance instructor Emma McGrath (27), who explained, 'Girls who come to the class are just everyday people - they might work in banks or are dinner ladies.

"Everyone Is new at it and learning at the same pace.

'Healthwise, it"s a complete all-over body work-out. It"s fun and all shapes and sizes come ... and there are no men.'

Class member Kathy McIver (29), Pitmedden Road, Dunfermline, signed up for the class with a friend to try something 'a bit different'.

The lecturer of English at Adam Smith College said, 'I am a confident person but by far the biggest girl in the class. But I don"t feel that I"m not good at it.

'It"s not the kind of environment where people are saying "she"s bigger than me", or "she"s thinner than me" - you are too focused on coming away with as few bruises as possible. It can be quite painful.

'I wanted to do an exercise where I"m working towards learning something. And I"ll be fit and a bit slimmer.

'Some people might say, "Hmm ... that"s for slappers", but we are pole dancing for fitness.

'A few of my own students think it"s a bit interesting but I"m not going to pack in the day job.'
