YOUTHS using the grounds of St John's Primary School as a "drinking den" are to be targeted by police.

The issue was one of three concerns raised by Rosyth residents who attended a Fife police "engagement' meeting last month at Parkgate Community Centre.

A total of 18 members of the public attended the meeting, highlighting seven issues they thought police should be tackling.

This was whittled down to three and included parking and safety issues at Park Road and Queensferry Road.

At Tuesday's meeting of Rosyth community council, chairman Mike Shirkie said, "One of the worrying signs at St John's was a mixture of things - some people were using the area as a drinking den.

"There was also evidence of people buying drink for young people and evidence St John's itself was being breached."

The meeting heard that youths had scaled the roof before dangling off gutters and dropping down into the school's quadrangle to drink.

He added, "(Police) find a lot of broken bottles as evidence of that and will keep an eye on it."

Anti-social behaviour by youths in nearby Duffy Place will also be targeted by police.

The meeting heard that parking problems along Park Road were mainly outside the Good News supermarket.

The safety issues along Queensferry Road focused on issues surrounding Elder Lea guest house.

Fife police launched the engagement meetings across the Kingdom in January.

It sees police community teams providing updates on action taken against three priorities agreed by the public at the previous meeting.

Frances Fraser, headteacher at St John's, told the Press she "welcomed any move that increases safety and protects the building after hours."
