GABLE ends in a Rosyth housing estate are to be painted BRIGHT WHITE in an attempt to reduce crime.

Six houses in Sherbrooke Road and two in Esmonde court will receive the lick of paint as well as the installation of new 'white light' lamposts in the streets.

It is thought that increasing brightness will help reduce problems such as anti-social behaviour and car crime.

Council locality manager Lynn Hoey revealed the Home Scotland-led initiative at a recent meeting of Rosyth Community Council.

She told the Press the housing association had been "working closely" with residents to improve the area. "One of the main issues was anti-social behaviour and damage to cars," she said.

"(Sherbrooke Road is) a through route and as people pass by they were wantonly damaging cars.

"It was recognised that better lighting would be helpful to resolve that."

She added, "A vegetable garden and trees have been planted and there has been talk of painting the gable ends and garage doors.

"Home Scotland are committed to do something in the Sherbrooke estate in partnership with Fife Council."

A spokeswoman for Home Scotland said, "Home Scotland is pleased to confirm that the gable ends of 12, 24, 168, 146, 144 and 122 Sherbrooke Road as well as 18 and 19 Esmonde Court in Rosyth will be partially painted white to reflect light back into the courtyard behind the homes to improve community safety.

From next year Fife Council will replace old sodium lighting with new columns and white lights.

"The yellow railings at the site of the former play area on the estate will be removed.

"Other proposals for improvements to the estate will go out to consultation with residents and will then be co-ordinated through the area committee for Edinburgh and Rosyth."

Meanwhile, Ms Hoey also told members of the community council that there had been a poor response from some shopkeepers in the area in efforts to reduce under-age alcohol sales.

She said the council was attempting to meet local traders to "limit proxy sales of alcohol" to youngsters.

She added, "It's disappointing.

"We've got some traders who are very interested and some that we have not seen.

"To be a success we must get all traders involved."
