A MAN and woman from Inverkeithing have been charged after the first seizure in Fife of newly outlawed drug mephedrone.
Fife police swooped on an address in the town on Friday and said a 20-year-old male and a 22-year-old female had been reported to the procurator fiscal.
Detective Inspector Derek McEwan stated, "A search warrant was executed at an address in Inverkeithing which has resulted in a quantity of mephedrone being seized.
"Since becoming illegal this is the first seizure of this type of drug in Fife and emphasises Fife Constabulary's commitment to tackling the problem of controlled drugs in our communities."
He added, "I would like to thank the public for their assistance when providing information to the police and ask that this continue.
"All intelligence we receive is assessed and where possible acted upon.
"I would also like to highlight to the public that mephedrone is now a controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act and any persons involved in the sale and supply of it will be targeted by the police."
Mephedrone, also known as meow meow, Mcat and bubbles, was known as a 'legal high' but became a Class B illegal substance last month after increasing concern about the drug and its effects.
Commonly used as plant food and labelled as 'unfit for human consumption', the drug was said by Fife police to be the likely cause when a 49-year-old Dunfermline woman collapsed and died in January.
