BRAVE: Noah with three-year-old sister Hannah.

A COURAGEOUS young boy from Rosyth, who has survived cancer, played a starring role at a special party held to salute the courage of all children coping with the disease.

Seven-year-old Noah Duncan was a guest of honour at the Little Star Awards party, held by Cancer Research UK and TK Maxx, on Saturday at London Zoo.

Noah, who was just one when he was diagnosed with orbital rhabdomyosarcoma - a tumour behind his eye - was one of 22 children from across the UK who came together as 'ambassadors' to represent the 301 children who received Little Star Awards in 2009/10.

Noah's family first realised something was wrong when, in May last year, he complained of double vision and his eye began to swell.

Tests revealed him to have an orbital rhabdomyosarcoma - a cancer behind his eye - and he was admitted to hospital immediately in Edinburgh for treatment.

Thankfully the cancer has responded well to an intensive course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and Noah's outlook is good, although he still has some problems with his vision.

Noah's father, Aaron, said, "We've had a great time at the party. It really put a smile on his face.

"Noah's last set of test results show that his treatment has been successful and we're all so grateful for everything that has been done for him."

Seven out of 10 youngsters with cancer are now treated successfully in the UK, compared with fewer than three out of 10 in the 1960s.

That progress, coupled with determination to improve survival rates still further, inspired TK Maxx to get together with Cancer Research UK, who they have partnered with since 2004. The labels-for-less retailer has already raised nearly £6 million to help beat children's cancer.

Cancer is the most common cause of death from illness in children aged between one and 14.

Each year, about 1500 children in the UK are diagnosed with the disease - around one in every 500.

The youngster met a host of celebrities including X Factor finalist Stacey Solomon, former EastEnders star Kara Tointon, winner of Sky 1's 'Got to Dance' Akai Osei and Blue Peter presenters past and present Konnie Huq and Andy Akinwolere.

And after the fun and entertainment, Noah and his family enjoyed an afternoon at the zoo.

The party was organised by Cancer Research UK and TK Maxx to help raise awareness of the charity's groundbreaking work in the field of childhood cancer research.

The Cancer Research UK Little Star Awards, in partnership with TK Maxx, are open to all under-17s who have cancer or have been treated for the disease in the last five years.

Unlike other children's awards, there is no judging panel because Cancer Research UK and TK Maxx believe that every child who confronts cancer is extra special.

The Little Star Awards will be opening for nominations once more in November.
