Job cuts loom for council workers

FIFE COUNCIL has warned of significant job cuts throughout its workforce.
The cuts are being made as part of a plan to reduce the local authority's budget by almost £120m over the next four years.
This could result in the loss of more than 1,800 posts.
The SNP/Lib Dem-controlled council announced a freeze on recruitment earlier this year.
Now they plan to ask workers to help reduce the workforce through voluntary redundancy, early retirement or by working more flexibly.
Currently half of the council's budget is spent on the salary costs of workers who deliver front line services and those who support them.
This Thursday (10th) councillors will discuss proposals at a meeting of the Policy, Finance and Area Management committee.
Have your say. .

Hooray - lets use the chance to get rid of all the 'non-jobs' and useless management throughout the Council. The Roads Department can be next to go, after all the money they waste on traffic lights and speed bumps etc. In fact, why not just get rid of the greedy snout in the trough 'Concillors' who recently made ludicrous claims for expenses. That would save us a fortune.....

Please dont say hooray, I need my job! I just hope that job losses dont affect the Occupational Therapy department as their waiting lists are enormous and staff shortages and budget cuts are already making their lives hell as it is. They need to cut spending on things that are not needed like artwork for buildings, the commission of useless scuptures etc. I also think they need to take a look at some of the Councillors ridiculous expences. Especially the ones who dont know their backsides from their elbows!

I am so pleased that this has finally happened! Not that I want anyone to lose their job, but... As a Council Tax victim of this council for many years I am glad that they are now going to lose extra capacity as we have been funding their profligate snorting for too long. Why should decent honest people who work hard have to fund these parasites ?

It's not entirely true, they are considering the possibility of early retirement, recruitment freezing and VOLUNTARY redundancies they aren't even considering compulsory redundancies yet, they want to try cutting budgets and accumulating funds from other places first!! And we need our jobs just like everyone else just because we work for the council doesn't mean we're ****! I've been made redundant before and it's an awful experience for anyone, hope it doesn't have to come to that, anyway the cuts are to be made over the next 5 years its not like its gonna happen tomorrow.

It is true ! I work for fife council and the news letters have been given to all staff. They want to bridge the gap, and will end up letting go almost 20% of their workforce.

It's not true that ALL staff will leave with good deals. Ive only been here 10 months or so and I would get nothing. I have a mortgage, debt and bills like everyone else. So no, loosing my job is not a good thing. Im am certainly not a slacker and you wouldnt believe the things I have to put up with from some of the "clients" that come into my reception. Please spare a thought for people like me who are genuinly worried about their future and the possibilty of having to fight for the non existent jobs out there if I was to be made redundant !

Oh, I'm sorry Grim Reaper, I didn't realise it was a spelling competition. I do have a degree but these days that means nothing. There is no need to be so pedantic. I was on my break and typing quickly. I do apologise. I'm glad that the Dunfermline Press does not accept texts because the comment page would need to be subtitled first!
All I am going to say is that I hope this does not affect my office because we are already struggling with staff shortages in all departments. Just think what this will do to the already lengthy waiting lists.

So eloquently put, tax payer, I shall ensure that I sit down on my next break as I would hate the great unwashed to get the wrong idea that because I was standing up that I was skiving.
Fife council are making staff redundant. In my case 3 weeks today. No voluntary option, no redeployment, no early retirement, no fat cat pay out either. Fife council have NO money to even make the effort. Get used to it and get over it, this is as good as it gets unless one moves to Perth and Kinross where budgeting is included in the manifesto and the people of that county are living a different life.

Worker- I really do not know what you are trying to convey in your post.
Davie Robb is right when he questions the quality of some posts here, however please do not tar us all with the same brush. I was stating that I was to be made redundant to make it clear that Fife council are at this stage. I was not bleating about it.
Just because I work for Fife Council does not make me a second class person. I need to work and better this job than benefits. I make no apologies for working to enable me to put food on the table.
Ironically the job which I have secured to follow my redundancy is with Fife council-but in a different department. I have had to be proactive in finding alternative employment as the council's redeployment "policy" is none existent. I tell you this to demonstrate the wasted money even in their cost cutting exercise. Instead of redeployment I have had to respond to an advertised vacancy, interview and all the admin that goes with this, disclosure check even though I already have two with Fife Council and although I have secured the post I am still not in-situ and Fife cCuncil are paying outside contracters whilst it's sorted.
Ther's always a bigger picture which unfortunately costs a lot of money to paint when the artist is Fife Council.

Here's a thought, every council worker in the Kingdom goes home tomorrow and they go back to work ONLY if they get a phone call saying they are needed at work.
After six weeks anyone still at home can get paid off, then we'll only have 'essential' workers surely?
