Aberdour girl lands panto role
IT may still be summertime - honestly - but one Aberdour girl is already dreaming of Christmas after landing a lead role in a festive Edinburgh show.
Aspiring actress Sophie Kavanagh (11) hopes the role of Mary Lennox in The Secret Garden will be her big break into showbiz.
The award-winning musical is based on Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic novel and will run at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre from 9th December to 8th January 2011.
And after the five-week festive run Sophie will jet off to Canada when the show moves to Toronto in March.
She said, “This is my dream coming true. I am really excited and very proud to be performing in this production of The Secret Garden.
“I love the atmosphere of a professional theatre and to be part of a cast and crew is so thrilling.”
Auditions were held last month and the Mary Erskine and Stewart’s Melville Junior School pupil was selected for the part by West End casting director David Grindrod.
Fellow pupil Toby Hughes will play Colin Craven and Festival Theatre chief executive, John Stalker, said, “The competition for these two roles was extremely strong and so Sophie and Toby have done tremendously well to succeed.
“They will be working alongside great and experienced actors so they will learn so much.”
The novel was first published in 1911 and appears regularly in the top 10 of children’s favourite literature.
It centres round a sad and lonely house on the Yorkshire moors, where the melancholy routine of a family in mourning is turned upside down with the arrival of a young orphan, Mary Lennox.
When she discovers the key to the hidden door of a secret walled garden, a long-locked away magic is released.
