A FAIRGROUND boss has slammed Rosyth Community Council for again refusing to let an annual funfair go ahead.

George Morrison (73) claimed members denied the application telling him it attracted "the wrong sort of people".

But he hit back, telling the Press, "They said we attract all the wrong sort of people. But you have them; we don't bring them in on buses!

"We attract families because it's a family funfair.

"It's a shame - we've been going there for 30 years and all of a sudden we can't.

"Rosyth gets money from us because of the families that come here. It gives something for them to do."

The community council said they refused the application from Morrison's Leisure Fairs mainly because of recent flooding problems at the grass site in Park Road.

Mr Morrison, of Broxburn, added, "We put boards down and have paid the council (for ground repairs) in previous years.

"The piece of land is used for nothing else.

"The funfair has been going there long before us."

The decision means Mr Morrison will lose two weeks' revenue this summer.

The funfair was also refused the go-ahead last year, with Mr Morrison claiming he was told about the decision just a week before it was due to start.

The latest decision was taken at a meeting of the community council, which Mr Morrison attended.

Mike Shirkey, chair of the community council, said, "It was not an easy decision to take.

"We were trying to balance the enjoyment of the kids and adults, including myself, who go down to the shows but at the moment it was felt that, because of the state of the place, it wouldn't take much more to cause another flood.

"The water table down there at the moment is pretty high. If anything gets put on the grass it's liable to churn it up.

"Because of the current financial climate, the flood measures needed down there are not going to take place."

He added, "There were also issues last year with people drinking later on and causing trouble. Residents complained to the police.

"We were at pains to point out to the owner that anti-social behaviour had nothing to do with him or his people running it.

"But it attracted problems, particularly later on at night."

Fife Council confirmed a letter was sent to Mr Morrison from Keith Jackson, parks and community events officer, confirming the decision "after consultation with the community council and local councillors".
