Rosyth fair banned beacuse it attracts 'wrong sort'
A FAIRGROUND boss has slammed Rosyth Community Council for again refusing to let an annual funfair go ahead.
George Morrison (73) claimed members denied the application telling him it attracted "the wrong sort of people".
But he hit back, telling the Press, "They said we attract all the wrong sort of people. But you have them; we don't bring them in on buses!
"We attract families because it's a family funfair.
"It's a shame - we've been going there for 30 years and all of a sudden we can't.
"Rosyth gets money from us because of the families that come here. It gives something for them to do."
The community council said they refused the application from Morrison's Leisure Fairs mainly because of recent flooding problems at the grass site in Park Road.
Mr Morrison, of Broxburn, added, "We put boards down and have paid the council (for ground repairs) in previous years.
"The piece of land is used for nothing else.
"The funfair has been going there long before us."
The decision means Mr Morrison will lose two weeks' revenue this summer.
The funfair was also refused the go-ahead last year, with Mr Morrison claiming he was told about the decision just a week before it was due to start.
The latest decision was taken at a meeting of the community council, which Mr Morrison attended.
Mike Shirkey, chair of the community council, said, "It was not an easy decision to take.
"We were trying to balance the enjoyment of the kids and adults, including myself, who go down to the shows but at the moment it was felt that, because of the state of the place, it wouldn't take much more to cause another flood.
"The water table down there at the moment is pretty high. If anything gets put on the grass it's liable to churn it up.
"Because of the current financial climate, the flood measures needed down there are not going to take place."
He added, "There were also issues last year with people drinking later on and causing trouble. Residents complained to the police.
"We were at pains to point out to the owner that anti-social behaviour had nothing to do with him or his people running it.
"But it attracted problems, particularly later on at night."
Fife Council confirmed a letter was sent to Mr Morrison from Keith Jackson, parks and community events officer, confirming the decision "after consultation with the community council and local councillors".

Report commentWhat a load of flipping tosh. Wherever there's an attraction, there'll be a wrong 'un element amongst it all. Are we to cancel all match fixtures 'cos a minority don't know how to conduct themsels properly? Shall we close Velocity nightclub 'cos there's allus some big man looking for a punchup?
George Morrison is right, the neds are already here and like flies round the proverbial they'll pitch up. I thought we had laws in this land though to deal with this section of society, so the rest of us can get on with having a good time with our families. This is a classic case of chucking out the baby with the bathwater.
Mike Shirkey said "We were at pains to point out to the owner that anti-social behaviour had nothing to do with him or his people running it. "But it attracted problems, particularly later on at night.
Why the "but" if a/s behaviour really has nothing to do with it.

Report commentFamilies dont go down their because their are so many neds, The owner's are obviousley not paying Fife council enough for repairs to the land, but he is saying the real reason is because of the neds.
What does he care, if families comes or not, either way he lines his pockets, and expects to pay the council back very little for the damage he's caused.

First and foremost as it's clearly an assumption you've made(an incorrect one at that)..i shall enlighten you. Not only do the fair pay a bond for sitting on the ground they acquire but also rent on top of that, if the ground get's damaged in any form not only do they lose there initial bond (a substantial amount that i have no place disclosing) but they will be "billed" by said council for the damages incurred, so... he doesn't pay the council "very little after he lines his pockets"..he pays the council the same as you and i do...what THEY TELL US TO PAY...
As for families not attending..have you been to the fair? cause i attend every year with my two children along with the majority of my street and anyone/everyone else i know... the middle chip shop "attracts what you call neds" but no one has made an attempt to close that...
MORE than 40 litres of alcohol were confiscated and 46 people were searched for drugs and weapons in South West Fife in a weekend police crackdown...was there a fair within a 10 mile radius ? No..
please in future refrain from making uneducated statements on subjects you obviously know nothing about..
i shall be writing to the press/council with a conclusive argument and petition to allow the fair back in to rosyth..if not to line the councils pockets..but to allow my children to empty mine...

Report commentThe prices raise in accordance with inflation as it takes electricity/diesel, council bonds/fees/rent and manpower to run a fair... the exact same as the links (kircakaldy) that hundreds if not thousands of us flock to..may i say without mention of prices or the amount of neds we have to weave through to get on a ride ...
As for the "buckie heads"...the police stated "Over the course of the weekend 17 plain clothes and six uniformed officers were dedicated towards making these areas safer communities"
A fifth of that amount would soon ensure it was a family funfair, there presence alone would ensure this much...
But as usual..effort when its needed is never available..and they wonder why our communities arent as close as they used to be...

Report commentMy caravan is parked in front of my house you degenerate donkey,
Just because I'm voicing the opinion of the minority and not agreeing with the general consensus doesn't make me a "tinker" as you so intelligently put it..
I'm a great believer in you reap what you sow and as a previous resident of parkside street ive witnessed the long arduous hours these people put in to not only there business but also our pleasure,
Just because your opinion differs from mine doesn't make it correct, in fact it actually aids my argument.. See your the prerequisite to a Ned, your a child that's probably raising more children with your moral values, based on skepticism racial stereotypes and what you believe to be the fundamental route to being hard, you should move to Texas or grow a pair and learn summit to teach your children if not yourself..
Your the kind of person that opens his mouth first.. You've watched a couple of documentaries on tv found some similarities and stereotyped a certain type of people all the same without taking any variables into account...
They are people trying to make a living and in essence the only ones stopping them from doing so are people like you.. You honestly disgust me,
Insults aren't clever they only show your clear lack knowledge or understanding!

Report commentI and my children will also miss the shows coming to Rosyth. My children used to look forward to the shows coming and enjoyed their time at the shows. I think the council need to see if alternative ground can be found in order for the shows still to come to this area, not all of us can afford to visit Burntisland/Kirkcaldy!!!
The person above comments on the price of the shows, I take it you have never taken you child/children to soft play/cinema lately!!
I would like also to point out to the council its not the shows that attract the wrong type of people, have the council never noticed these people are in Rosyth all year round, hanging about street corners or the middle chip shop in Rosyth. The wrong type of people as the council calls them are residents of Rosyth that the council have housed in Rosyth. Maybe the Council needs to be more involved with the police and sort these type of people that the council describe in order for the good people and their children of Rosyth still to enjoy the pleasure of the shows. Why should the "wrong type of People" spoil it for every Rosyth resident.

Report commentOh dear, whatever has happened to the fair town once known as the Garden City. I used to have a few friends who lived in Queensferry Road (The proper end). They left due to the degenerate behaviour of rowdy drunken offspring of the lower classes.
Its not a nice place anymore.
I understand though you can get a nice cup of tea and scrumptious cake at the Palace Cafe which used to be a dry cleaners......
Its sad that a once thriving community has been dragged down to its current depth of depravity, I hope there are enough good people left to turn it around.

Report commentSandra, are you miserable jan's pal? "them" rides, you mention in one breath that they make you sick but in the next breath you complain that they aren't exciting and we should have a theme park. Do you mean one that has a ride like "the big one" or the "corkscrew" as in Blackpool, those gentle rides that don't make you sick at all or do you mean like the play park at the Glen? Listen to yourself. At least miserable jan's rubbish is coherent rubbish.

Report commentAgree with the above comment, police presence alone would soon put an end to anti-social behavior, as for your fence and the bottles...have you been to the park lately? I walk my dog there pretty much every day and have to hop skip and jump broken bottles..and don't even venture over to the skate ramp or school.. All these issues that have caused the fair to be banned are apparent before they come and long after they leave!!!

Report commentI've just come across this article and find myself reading about this town full of 'low life families' and reaching levels of 'depravity' so bad that it's not safe to bring the shows here. Let me tell you, I've lived in Rosyth for most of my life and this does not paint an accurate picture of our town. It certainly doesn't describe how I see our town. It is no worse than any other town in the UK - there are bad apples in every barrel but thankfully the majority of people are better than that. Rosyth still has a lot going for it and the majority of the people who live here are decent respectable people who care about the town they live in and the environment they bring their families up in. I think if you read the original article properly you will find that the main reason for the Community Council refusing to allow the fair to come here is due to the added risk of flooding on the ground they use. As I write this, we are in our second day of continual, torrential rain and I understand the area around Park Road School (right across the road from where the fair takes place) is so flooded that fire engines have been there since midnight last night so it seems that the Community Council have a point. We are also in the 5th day of rioting and looting in towns and cities south of the border - I think that makes me quite happy to be living in Rosyth.
