A CARNOCK man was left shocked after a close encounter with a large black cat near Wellwood recently.

He claims he saw the beast on Oxnam Road after he had pulled into a lay-by next to a field to answer his mobile phone.

The man, who is retired and in his sixties, did not want to be named but told the Press, "I was talking on the phone and saw sheep in the field going like the clappers.

"Right along the hedge I saw this black thing coming towards a gate and thought it was a black Labrador.

"It stopped and looked into the car. This seemed to last ages but could only have been a few seconds.

"The distance between my car and the cat was 12-15 feet. I'm 100 per cent sure of what I saw and I was shocked to my boots.

"It was a beautiful animal, don't get me wrong, but the first thing I did was lock the car doors.

"I was frozen. The cat then turned and walked away towards Townhill."

The incident happened on Saturday 12th March at around 6pm as the man left Wellwood Recycling Centre.

The cat is described as jet black, large but lean with a smooth coat. It was approximately 2.5 feet tall, 4.5 feet long, excluding the tail which was long and sweeping.

The witness contacted police to report the sighting as he was concerned about the safety of children and joggers who use a nearby cycle path.

Bob Wallace, Fife representative of Big Cats in Britain (BCIB), said, "People should be aware that a cat could be in the area and remain vigilant."

Previous reported sightings of black cats have taken place both in Devilla and Blairadam forests.

If you think you may have spotted a big cat contact Bob Wallace on his email address, wallace_robert@yahoo.co.uk or on 07936 719909.
