Man 'frozen' by cat
A CARNOCK man was left shocked after a close encounter with a large black cat near Wellwood recently.
He claims he saw the beast on Oxnam Road after he had pulled into a lay-by next to a field to answer his mobile phone.
The man, who is retired and in his sixties, did not want to be named but told the Press, "I was talking on the phone and saw sheep in the field going like the clappers.
"Right along the hedge I saw this black thing coming towards a gate and thought it was a black Labrador.
"It stopped and looked into the car. This seemed to last ages but could only have been a few seconds.
"The distance between my car and the cat was 12-15 feet. I'm 100 per cent sure of what I saw and I was shocked to my boots.
"It was a beautiful animal, don't get me wrong, but the first thing I did was lock the car doors.
"I was frozen. The cat then turned and walked away towards Townhill."
The incident happened on Saturday 12th March at around 6pm as the man left Wellwood Recycling Centre.
The cat is described as jet black, large but lean with a smooth coat. It was approximately 2.5 feet tall, 4.5 feet long, excluding the tail which was long and sweeping.
The witness contacted police to report the sighting as he was concerned about the safety of children and joggers who use a nearby cycle path.
Bob Wallace, Fife representative of Big Cats in Britain (BCIB), said, "People should be aware that a cat could be in the area and remain vigilant."
Previous reported sightings of black cats have taken place both in Devilla and Blairadam forests.
If you think you may have spotted a big cat contact Bob Wallace on his email address, wallace_robert@yahoo.co.uk or on 07936 719909.

Report commentThis is not the first time this has been spotted. Some investigation was done in Devilla a few years back and sightings have been made across Fife. The range of an animal like this could easily cover a large part of Fife, so finding it would be... interesting. However, he is not the only one to have reported this. The reports that I have seen have all referred to a Jet Black cat of this size, so there is a degree of consistency.

Report commentI'm with you Neily -J.
"The man, who is retired and in his sixties, did not want to be named".
If he was on his phone surely he could of taken a photo of it, or did he conveniently not have a camera phone (must be one of very few folk now)?
I like how The Press has given "THE CAT" super powers now in the fact that it can freeze you!
BEWARE.....or you could wear a warm jacket just incase!

Report commentI can see the headline now.... Panic as Big Cat photographed in Wellwood, residents protest "na'budie tell't us!!! MA WEE UN's tha wint out wiout tha stanleys!!!!!"
Ya can't complain if you took the "P" when you were told! This cat has been reported from St Andrews down to Kincardine as far as I know over the last 5 years or so. It probably lives off rabbits, domestic cats and such like.

Report commentPlease could stop slagging this man off he was scared not frozen by the big cat and i believe eveything this man had seen. He didn't want to be named as he didn't want people to pester him about, he only reportedit because he was worried it might harm someone and finally he does not know how to use the camera on his phone as most pensioners will not know how too.

Report commentTo be honest, when faced by a big cat staring in your window such that you want to lock the doors... The last thing in my mind would be reaching for the mobile phone that had to be placed well out of reach, just in case the Police stop ya and try to claim you were using it. Let alone working your way through all the menu's to get the camera workin'! Plus, black cat, dark hedgerow, typical overcast Fife day... You'd get a black smudge on a black background illuminated in dark grey light! lol ;) I mean, look at how successful our CCTV is!
