Travellers should stick to their sites, says Tolson as new arrivals set up camp
THE arrival of travellers in a Dunfermline car park has been described "totally unacceptable" by election candidate Jim Tolson.
A resident in Appin Crescent complained to Lib Dem Mr Tolson saying the travellers had arrived on Saturday.
"The taxpayers in West Fife have paid a lot of money to build good quality sites for travelling people and so I would encourage them to use them," said Mr Tolson.
"From speaking to the council and the police it would appear that these travellers have been there before and plan to stay for a couple of weeks.
"We have seen in other places where travellers have stopped that there can be a problem with mess and intimidating local people.
"It's totally unacceptable that people have to put up with caravans looking over into their gardens in this way.
"When so much taxpayers' money is being spent on sites for travellers such the one up by Kelty then we shouldn't have these illegal encampments appearing."
Councillor Alice McGarry, chairwoman of the Fife gypsy travellers working group, said, "If they are parking in a public car park I would expect the council will take action.
"In the first instance they would try to persuade people to move but, if they have to, they will go for an interdict. The council are quick off the mark in these cases and they're not a soft touch.
"However, we're not in a strong position because of the lack of temporary places for travellers passing through Fife.
"If we go to court and a sheriff can ask what provision we can offer and whether there are any problems being caused.
"If there is anti-social behaviour taking place then the police will handle it."
The council is currently looking at building stop-over sites for travellers near Cairneyhill and at Crossgates.
"There has been no local consultation so far and we need to convince local people that these sites wouldn't result in problems. If that was the case they would be closed down," said Mrs McGarry.
"We're in a stronger position if we have these temporary sites but the problem is people usually don't want them within miles of their homes."
There were problems caused in Fife last summer with larger groups of travellers descending on different areas including Duloch Park, Dalgety Bay and Inverkeithing.
"That was out of the ordinary for Fife. They were large groups and they were causing concern to people and making them feel uncomfortable," said Mrs McGarry.
"We need a change in law to make it the same as England where the local authority can take court action whereas in Scotland it's the land-owner."
For Fife police, Community Inspector Ian Paterson said, "Officers have made contact with the travellers who are currently at Leys Park Road, which is a first step in instigating our protocol which will now involve the Fife Council Travelling Persons Liaison Officer. The situation will be monitored until a resolution is achieved."

Report comment"Fife Council Travelling Persons Liason Officer", what in the name of gypsy rose is that. If these encampments are illegal, the travellers should be moved on. End of story.
Fife council have not got money to waste on "monitoring" and "resolutions" or positions with absurd titles.
Harsh times, harsh rules. Fine, live your life as a traveller, but as with a lot of things in life, there is always a downside and there is always a minority who give the majority a bad name. And the bad name that travellers have is that they leave a mess, incidencies of petty crime rise and they do not pay their way in the community. The cars in this photograph are newer than mine and the caravans look in excellent condition too, so money to pay for legal sites shouldn't be an issue.
It's a shame but a fact of housing prices is that travellers pitched up in your neighbourhood, lower the tone, just as having the town landfill nearby does.

Report commentTolson says an obvious breach in the law is "totally unacceptable" - the man is a genius.
What I find more "totally unacceptable" however, is the fact that some residents (in an area of Fife that I won't name) reportedly petrol-bombed an illegal traveller camp some time ago.
Contempt breeds contempt, Jan. As it happens, Fraser Avenue is a street full of people who have had no other choice in their housing - if you're homeless, you'll take the first place going. Does that mean that the residents are worth any less? No, I think not.
Jan, why not take a visit down there for yourself? Why not speak to some of the people down there?

Report commentI'll resist the urge to say that some of those statements you make, Jan, could equally apply to you - oops I said it anyway - however, the point is that once again you are making broad sweeping statements about people you have no knowledge of beacuse you choose not to engage with them.
Any travellers I have come across in my profession - these are families who use the permanent sites, and who stay for months not just days - are amongst the most courteous people you could meet. They have no airs and graces, a spade is a spade, but their kids certainly know how to behave. Furthermore, the children are clean, clever and are amongst the few who always wear school uniform; their parents also work.
Any comeback, or are you going to persist in hiding behind your prejudiced stereotypes?

Don't get me wrong, I don't condone the actions of the travellers at Appin Crescent in any way, but there are travellers and travellers, as there are sub-groups within all facets of society. There are, and always will be, those who seek to integrate into the community they stop within; and, more importantly, don't behave in the manner highlighted.
The amount of hate on this board only serves to highlight the general ignorance and apathy that is directed towards people we don't know or understand. Under the circumstances I'd argue the Liaison Officer's future is safe!

The Sportsman bar was a favourite haunt many moons ago, too many to count, along with the Golden Age, Goth and Dockyard Club. I was born and brought up in Rosyth and loved every minute of it. You could put the travelling folk in the area beside the Dockyard or along the Coal Road if you want to segregate them from the local community.

Report commentLet's be clear about this, people from the areas mentioned here, Fraser Ave, Oakley, Valleyfield, Rosyth, etc etc, are our community. Most of them are from generations that have lived in this area for many years. Lets not start 'happy slapping' each other, when we would do better by uniting and sorting out this kind of issue.
It is undoubtedly an issue if anyone turns up over your garden fence and starts dropping litter, not to mention faeces all over the place. If you are seen dropping a cigarette end in the High Street, or chucking a sweetie wrapper out of your car, or leaving your doggies mess in the park, you will receive a fine of varying amounts, and if you are employed, and a tax payer, you will pay.. (whether you want to or not) If you are unemployed, and have nothing that can be taken from you by bailiffs, then you do not have to pay..
There is the problem! So rather than start knocking each other about, lets make it known that if the 'visitors' to our area, whether 'travellers', or 'europeans picking veggies' do anything that we would be punished for, they should be punished more, and it goes without saying, moved on, out of our area altogether! To where? Back to where they came from!

Report commentThere are such things as stop over sites. They are touring sites and you pay money to stay on these. Why should so called "travellers" be any different? The reason they do not stay on the existing travelling sites provided by the council is that they are imposters in the gyspie world and realistically their behaviour would not be tolerated by the likes of your "proper" gypsies who do actually have some standards!!

Report commentTo Bob - Back to where they came from is really quite easy to work out! Just because they, and we, are members of EU, 'they' came from somewhere other than here, and to go back there is 'back to where they came from'
To expand this, we are all from 'The World' and I suppose by your argument just to be somewhere in the world is 'back to where you came from' I do not agree!
I do however completely agree with your reference to the system-scroungers, and yes we do need to deal with them first. As I have said elsewhere, if people that had contributed nothing to society, never earned a wage, never paid tax, were correspondingly given nothing for nothing, they would soon have to get off their lazy backsides and try and get something.
I could suggest they pick veggies in the North East of our fine county once we send all the Eastern Europeans 'back to where they came from' but I guess that doesn't fit with your 'membership of the EU' piece! ;-)

Report commentDino - where would you suggest travellers come from, then? The majority travel between Ireland, London and Scotland, all of which are within the UK.
Your big world notion is clutching at straws - you were the one who initially mentionned 'Europeans', therefore my EU statement is quite valid. But, if you wish to pursue the idea of homeland genocide, then just imagine what's going to get sent back here. More work-shy, tax evading scroungers that will contribute SFA to Britain, which doubtless explains why they left here in the first place. You're only going to replace like with like!

Report comment"Not happy Jan" you can't see past your own nose for snobbery. Leave the people of our disadvantaged areas(fraser avenue/burnside you mentioned) alone. Its their circumstances that led them to live in these areas not choice. I live in a very well off area and believe you me its not just gypsies who drop litter, throw it out car windows and leave everywhere! Why can't gypsies be allocated a large field(owned by council put they pay a small levy to camp) in the middle of the country(away from local residents) in each council area thus enabling them to travel freely as they wish. I know what they can get up to(some of it not pleasant at all to some of us) but you know what we can't stop them from travelling, thats what they do! Anything else they do should be dealt with the legal system - they pay or they get imprisioned - simple as that

Report commentI'm not talking about numbers, ideology or operational procedures Speed-Ham, I'm talking about the MENTALITY, especially in a country that has endured the Highland Clearances. In times of economic hardship it would take only the slightest tweak for a predominantly Scottish military to target immigrants, (recent and past), and deprive them of their wealth and property. Witness Ireland. Witness Bosnia. Africa, The Middle East. South America. The merest tweak, a couple of murders and the whole place goes upside down. The sort of mentality portrayed here, attacking travellers, plays right into the hands of the type of sick mind who would cast these people as the reason for all our troubles, encourage some of us to kill a few of them and now everybody has blood on their hands or is looking for vengeance while the instigator of this chaos makes a pile of cash and funds a private army.
You have to understand the implications of what you are saying. You might think you are only having a "laugh" on a forum for a small town rag; but what you are actually doing here is reinforcing a mindset and an attitude that could quite easily, incite and tolerate mass murder. If you can tolerate the mass murder of foreigners in your name you could quite easily make the transition to murdering ANYONE you didn't like the look of, even people from the same street as you.
Be careful what you, and the rest of the posters, say Heed-Case, life is too short for us to make it painful for each other.

No-one is advocating gassing travellers, the general consensus is they can easily have their way of life, what they want to do is of no concern of mine. All that any 'normal' person would want is for them to integrate into society and co-exist without trashing where they set up camp and making everyone round about them's life a misery.

What has Michael Moore films got to do with anything Dough-Heid? Can you not express yourself clearly withoug all the crap? You are just making the "trail of destruction costing 10 grand to clean" story up. Why not 20 grand, 50 grand, 100 grand? You are not advocating gassing travellers but with your racist drivel you are creating an environment where it could be possible. You are calling them "abnormal, that is demonising and dehumanising them. The next step is gassing them. You say what they do is no concern of yours but it is, what we all do is of concern to each of us. We can't just ignore each other. If you choose to live like a dog in a kennel that is your choice but don't expect everybody to want to "integrate" with you. Respect is a two way thing. Travellers have been disrespected for centuries in this country it must be very difficult for them to respect people like you Spew-Ball!
Go back and read what I said freaky years. Once again your limited intelligence has meant you cannot comprehend what I'm really saying so you twist my words into something different. I see you've taken to playground changing people's names, which has the potential to be funny. But not in your case, you're lacking a vital skill, actually your lacking a lot more but that's for another forum.
Got any friends trisky...

Report commentYou don't get it do you early biscuits? You don't even know me. You react to words I type in an ugly manner because you are incapable dealing with the implications of them.
".........but that's for another forum." Does that mean you can't think of anything derogatory to say about me but you are implying that you can? You are such a baby early night. You are totally lost without a gang, which brings us to, "Have I got any friends?" Ouch! I see you have taken to rhetorical questions again. You will find you are limited in the ways you can be nasty whereas I can shoot holes in capitalism and criticise racism, bullying, warfare, the media, the security services, politicians and exploitation in a multitude of ways. Your attacks on me only make you look like an apologist for nasty people and the nasty things they do.
Once again you have twisted the topic of my posts, (this time racist comments by racist people and the warning of where this racism could lead), away from what it is and into a personal attack on me. Are you not aware that only small town bigots like yourself reading this will think you're clever? Anybody else would say you are an apologist for racism.
Keep on ramblin', keep on movin', keep on keepin' on. Peace and love.

Report commentNo trisky, you twist and turn everything into something that no-one else is commenting on. The racism is in your head, if people don't like somebody that is their prerogative and none of your business. You're right I don't know you, thank God, nor do I like you. In your mind that equates to an uprising of the masses against all that is triskel.
If only...

Report commentI'm commenting on the racism in this forum. You can dislike someone without dehumanising them. Dehumanising someone is racist and could lead to their murder. I don't like racism, war, inequality, injustice and bullying etc. stuff like that. You seem to have a problem with me because I condemn these things. Why is that? Do you like racsim, war, inequality, injutice and bullying?
It appears that you DO know me and you know me VERY well early bath. You are able to tell me what is in my mind. ("In your mind that equates to an uprising of the masses against all that is triskel").

Report commentTriskie Diskie my old chap you comment on oil, all be it a worthy one is based on what in the context of the travellers?
The price of cleaning up after travellers is not made up and is available for anyone with a head to see for themselves. (Council expenditure is published for all to see my old friend)
You need to take a chill pill and calm down just a tad, what you fail to get through your rage for all things white european is if a section of the 'community' doesn't WANT to integrate and cause nothing but trouble is not racist, if i don't like someone/somthing the colour of their skin, racial background or their religious beliefs have nowt to do with it, if they are unpleasant and downright nasty to anyone or anything outside their circle (and unless you are one of them) that'll mean you too is my choice and has nothing to do with race..
P.S. Get over yersel...........
P.P.S. The name changing thing all be it quite amusing in a childish kind of way isn't scoring you any brownie points on what is a compelling read from your part..........
