CASH-STARPPED Fife Council is to spend more than £4500 replacing oversized speed bumps in Rosyth's Queensferry Road that caused vibrations in nearby homes.

Last week residents were stunned to find the humps on Queensferry Road had virtually vanished overnight after the local authority discovered they no longer met design requirements.

However, it will only provide a temporary respite for drivers as, having spent £1500 removing them, the council now plans to spend another £3000 building new speed cushions over the summer months.

Residents had complained that the obstacles were too big and traffic was causing vibrations in their homes and excess noise when vehicles travelled over the large humps.

Chairman of Rosyth Community Council, Mike Shirkie, was one resident who had no idea the bumps were about to be removed.

He said, "We'd been away on holiday and came back and saw they were away.

"I was as surprised as anybody.

"One group wanted them as it was a safety issue while another said they were too big and were causing problems.

"There were complaints of the noise from the traffic going over them, claiming they were too big and that houses either side could feel shaking."

Nearby resident Dave Greenwood was concerned that without the bumps the road would become another haven for boy racers in the intervening period.

He said, "You will now find probably a lot more people will use this road instead of the dual carriageway.

"Kids used to race down there before they put the bumps in. They were put there in the first place as a speed deterrent.

"They'll be flying down Queensferry Road now. Kids speeding was something that was always brought up at local police meetings."

Fife Council roads boss Frank Warrington confirmed the speed bumps would be replaced over the course of the summer months.

He said, "The width of the speed bumps complied with design requirements when they were installed but as those requirements have now changed we're now replacing them with slightly narrower ones.

"We certainly have had a number of complaints about vibration. We checked the levels of vibration and did an investigation into the sizes and we're changing them into the current specification to reduce the amount of vibration."

Asked if there were other areas of concern regarding the size of speed bumps, Mr Warrington said there were none that he was aware of and this was likely to be a one-off incident.
