SMOKE billowed out from a huge fire at an Inverkeithing scrapyard this morning (Friday).

Eleven firefighting crews tackled the blaze which affected around 1000 tonnes of scrap at RM Supplies.

Fife's Fire Service was alerted to the emergency at 5.45am in the yard of the business on Cruickness Road.

They soon required assistance from Central Scotland Fire Service in Stirling who supplied a water bowser to support the water supply.

No one was injured but residents in nearby North Queensferry were advised to close their windows as smoke poured across the Forth Estuary.

Along with fire crews' hose reel jets, the firm's cranes were used to remove burning material from the huge pile of affected scrap.

Meanwhile, Inverkeithing and large parts of Rosyth were shrouded in smoke this afternoon, long after the fire had been put out at around 1pm.

NHS Fife said there was no "significant risk to public health" cause by the smoke.

Fire fighters remain at the scene turning over scrap for any possible hotspots.

It is expected that two fire engine crews will stay at the scene overnight as a precaution.

Fife Fire Service's operations area manager Ian Vincent said, "This is a particularly difficult incident due to the amount of scrap involved.

"It's estimated there's around 1000 tonnes of scrap affected and we are grateful for the efforts of the owners of the yard who helped clear a path to the base of the fire.

"At the moment the fire is being brought under control and we plan to scale our operation down overnight."
