FIFE COUNCIL have painted themselves into a corner at Inverkeithing rail station.

Commuters were put in a tight spot when they discovered on Monday that markings had been put down at the Chapel Place car park for new parking bays they couldn't get out of.

The new bays, which were marked out at the weekend, are surrounded on all sides by other parking slots, which would leave drivers rooted to the spot if all bays are full.

Dunfermline commuter Gordon Philp (42), who senrt in this photograph, told the Press of his disbelief when he saw the markings.

He said, "My colleague, Graeme Crowe, and I use the car park every morning and get there around 6.30am.

"On Friday we were joking what they were going to do with the spaces, because they were all marked out for the lines to be painted.

"On Monday I initially pulled into the long space at the front, then Graeme saw the three other spaces behind and said, 'How the hell are they going to get out?'

"I looked and we just burst out laughing.

"It was quite good to start the Monday with a chuckle!

"The car park could obviously do with more parking spaces but in reality I don't think more than five spaces will have been put in once they rejig the lines."

The mainline station is one of the busiest in Fife and Inverkeithing residents have had trouble with the number of commuters who park, sometimes illegally, in nearby streets.

Fife Council own the car park and are responsible for the markings, which were carried out as part of resurfacing work.

Jim Beveridge, lead officer, parking management, said, "We hired contractors to resurface the car park and increase the number of parking bays to improve the facility for local rail users.

"They were working to an agreed layout but, when carrying out the work on Saturday, unfortunately created a bay that shouldn't have existed.

"We were only made aware of the problem on Monday afternoon and the contractors corrected their mistake on Tuesday morning, at their own cost."
