Cancer survivor Judith hits the catwalk
A WEST FIFE cancer survivor will glam it up and hit the catwalk next month.
Judith Lawson, of North Queensferry, is one of 19 "exceptional and inspiring people" taking part in Breast Cancer Care Scotland's fashion show in Glasgow.
She will be transformed with a top-to-toe makeover and styled in a range of designer outfits before taking to the catwalk at the Radisson Blu Hotel.
Judith was inspired to become a model for a day after attending a London fund-raising dinner with her daughter.
Her cancer scare came in 1997 when a normal day turned into a nightmare upon discovering a lump.
She recalled, "I had been playing my usual Friday tennis with friends, did the weekly shop and when I got home decided to have a shower.
"That is when I found the lump. I immediately called the GP, was seen the next day and he confirmed that it was indeed a lump.
By the following Tuesday I was in Queen Margaret Hospital (QMH), had the lump and some lymph nodes removed and was then advised that it was indeed malignant.
"But because of my swift action the cancer had not gone into the lymph nodes. This was a huge relief."
Once the wound healed, Judith, of Carlingnose Point, underwent intense radiotherapy every weekday for five weeks at the Western General in Edinburgh and received further follow-up treatment at QMH.
"The worst thing was telling my family," she said.
"Of course my son and daughter were fantastic but it must have shocked them to the core to learn that their mother had cancer.
"One doesn't appreciate just how precious life is until something like this strikes.
"I had my own breast care nurse who was at the end of the telephone any time of the day.
"I also had the most fantastic support from my family and women friends.
"To be a survivor has to be the most fantastic feeling in the world and I was one of the lucky ones who had exceptional treatment and back-up at Queen Margaret Hospital.
"For that I am eternally grateful."
Lorraine Dallas, head of Breast Cancer Care Scotland, said, "We are all extremely excited to see our inspiring models take to the catwalk.
"These men and women have dealt with a difficult illness; some are still living with breast cancer.
"The show is the perfect opportunity for them to let their hair down and be treated to a once-in-a-lifetime experience while raising money to help others facing a breast cancer diagnosis."
The money raised from this year's show will enable the charity to continue offering a range of free practical services and also help Breast Cancer Care to continue providing support via freephone 0808 800 6000 and at www.breastcancercare.org.uk
For more information on the show call 0141 353 8330 or email scottishfashionshow@breastcancercare.org.uk.

Report commentMatron & Nurse Lesley would you stop encouraging the baiters by falling for their tricks and getting wound up, sorry but they can play you both very easily. Just don't bother replying to their taunts. UJ and his ilk will eventually dry up and blow away if you don't give giving them what they want, they're trolls and exist to p*ss people off and to get them riled into starting senseless arguments. They will keep trolling this site as long as posters inter-act with them.
