WEST FIFE residents are scared heavy goods vehicles from Amazon's new Dunfermline delivery centre could turn urban roads into a "rat-run".

Dunfermline and West Fife MP Thomas Docherty claimed homeowners in Dunfermline's Eastern Expansion (DEX) and Rosyth were worried lorries and trucks will choose to drive through Dunfermline and Rosyth at peak times to reach the motorway rather than using the Halbeath exit.

Residents met politicians, Fife Council and Amazon officials last week in Dunfermline City Chambers to discuss concerns over the building of the new facility.

Mr Docherty said, "One huge concern that residents have, not just near the site but in the wider area, is about goods vehicles turning left out of the site and tanking it through Sandpiper Drive and Lapwing Drive down Carnegie Avenue.

"They are worried they will treat the eastern expansion and Rosyth as a rat-run.

"The concern is that at busy times they might choose to go through Rosyth through Castlandhill Road and join the motorway at the North Queensferry junction and bypass the whole M90."

Dunfermline South councillor Mike Rumney, who also attended the meeting, said, "There's no way we're going to close off Sandpiper Drive.

"Amazon have been advised that all traffic and heavy goods vehicles must turn right out of their sight to go up Sandpiper Drive to Halbeath and access the motorway that way."

Residents living near the development also complained of light and noise pollution as well as the visual impact the colour design of the building is having on the landscape.

Mr Docherty said, "It's very intrusive if you live right next door. There is a huge amount of noise going on and it's phenomenally disruptive to them.

"Work starts at 7.30am and continues until 7pm and not enough sound and light proofing has been put up yet.

"There is a particular yellow entranceway at the front which can be seen from everywhere and it does have a visual impact on the whole expansion.

"Everyone is in favour of Amazon. No-one is against Amazon coming. If they wanted corporate colours they should have been facing onto the motorway side, not onto the residential side."

Mr Rumney added, "I have a lot of sympathy for residents who are going to be troubled with light pollution and vehicles leaving the site.

"I proposed at the meeting that we get round the table with Fife Council's head of development services Keith Winter and try to sort these things out."

A meeting has been arranged for next week between Fife Council and representatives from the local residents.

Fife Council's business and strategy senior manager Robin Presswood said, "A consultation drop-in event was hosted at the City Chambers on Thursday 11th August.

"This was arranged by Amazon to feedback on additions to the landscaping scheme and other measures taken to address issues raised by local residents.

"Fourteen neighbours attended the drop-in event in total together with local elected members.

"The council has agreed to host a meeting with the neighbours concerned to consider further the matters raised."

An Amazon spokesperson said, "Amazon met with residents in June to provide an overview of the new site and its landscaping.

"As a result of feedback from that meeting, a number of enhancements to the site are being made, including the planting of more trees around the perimeter, the removal of a planned pathway in Lorn Place and the relocation of Amazon signage.

"In addition, a second access to the car park is being created which, alongside the introduction of signage directing drivers to junction 3 of the M90 for site access, will reduce traffic in residential areas.

"We look forward to opening the new site later this year and it playing an integral role in fulfilling customer orders."
