Residents fear Amazon 'rat-run'
WEST FIFE residents are scared heavy goods vehicles from Amazon's new Dunfermline delivery centre could turn urban roads into a "rat-run".
Dunfermline and West Fife MP Thomas Docherty claimed homeowners in Dunfermline's Eastern Expansion (DEX) and Rosyth were worried lorries and trucks will choose to drive through Dunfermline and Rosyth at peak times to reach the motorway rather than using the Halbeath exit.
Residents met politicians, Fife Council and Amazon officials last week in Dunfermline City Chambers to discuss concerns over the building of the new facility.
Mr Docherty said, "One huge concern that residents have, not just near the site but in the wider area, is about goods vehicles turning left out of the site and tanking it through Sandpiper Drive and Lapwing Drive down Carnegie Avenue.
"They are worried they will treat the eastern expansion and Rosyth as a rat-run.
"The concern is that at busy times they might choose to go through Rosyth through Castlandhill Road and join the motorway at the North Queensferry junction and bypass the whole M90."
Dunfermline South councillor Mike Rumney, who also attended the meeting, said, "There's no way we're going to close off Sandpiper Drive.
"Amazon have been advised that all traffic and heavy goods vehicles must turn right out of their sight to go up Sandpiper Drive to Halbeath and access the motorway that way."
Residents living near the development also complained of light and noise pollution as well as the visual impact the colour design of the building is having on the landscape.
Mr Docherty said, "It's very intrusive if you live right next door. There is a huge amount of noise going on and it's phenomenally disruptive to them.
"Work starts at 7.30am and continues until 7pm and not enough sound and light proofing has been put up yet.
"There is a particular yellow entranceway at the front which can be seen from everywhere and it does have a visual impact on the whole expansion.
"Everyone is in favour of Amazon. No-one is against Amazon coming. If they wanted corporate colours they should have been facing onto the motorway side, not onto the residential side."
Mr Rumney added, "I have a lot of sympathy for residents who are going to be troubled with light pollution and vehicles leaving the site.
"I proposed at the meeting that we get round the table with Fife Council's head of development services Keith Winter and try to sort these things out."
A meeting has been arranged for next week between Fife Council and representatives from the local residents.
Fife Council's business and strategy senior manager Robin Presswood said, "A consultation drop-in event was hosted at the City Chambers on Thursday 11th August.
"This was arranged by Amazon to feedback on additions to the landscaping scheme and other measures taken to address issues raised by local residents.
"Fourteen neighbours attended the drop-in event in total together with local elected members.
"The council has agreed to host a meeting with the neighbours concerned to consider further the matters raised."
An Amazon spokesperson said, "Amazon met with residents in June to provide an overview of the new site and its landscaping.
"As a result of feedback from that meeting, a number of enhancements to the site are being made, including the planting of more trees around the perimeter, the removal of a planned pathway in Lorn Place and the relocation of Amazon signage.
"In addition, a second access to the car park is being created which, alongside the introduction of signage directing drivers to junction 3 of the M90 for site access, will reduce traffic in residential areas.
"We look forward to opening the new site later this year and it playing an integral role in fulfilling customer orders."

Report commentGraham Gibson, can this rag stop calling Duloch Park "Dunfermline's Eastern Expansion (DEX)". It is so boring of you and save you lots of type as that is only 10 characters compared to at least 37 for the latter. For a Dunfermline newspaper you would think you could name an area - there are signs saying Duloch Park at junctions etc. I have never bought your paper and never will till you stop with the boring DEX

Report commentwould there be complaints if it was built in abbeyview for example? Surely the fact is that there is currently no evidence that they will bypass the signage as it has not happened yet. We need the jobs in Dunfermline and more investment from firms, so a little give and take is warrented. A yellow entrance is not such a big deal considering the impact of job creation. Petty complaints with no substance (yet) will only serve to alienate the attitudes of Duloch Park and show the selfishness to those who wish to improve the job situation. I'm sure the powers that be will be professional in thier attitude and work with Duloch Park residents to reassure them.

Report commentMoan, moan moan! Is that all the numpties from Duloch do?
This is what happens when your house is next to land that was put aside for industrial use, at some point there was going to be units built on this land, just be thankful its one or two big developments and not lots of small units with more traffic.
Why would the traffic going to and coming from Amazon go through the built up areas when they will be delys, traffic lights etc when 2 mins the other way and they're on the motorway?
Residents of the eyesore that is the eastern expansion, get a grip!

Report commentSome very childish remarks on this comments board as is the norm for the Press site. It's very easy to slag other posters with what you think are funny and witty comments, believe me there's nobody on this entire site ever that's in the least bit a comedian. The people that live next to this site do have some legitimate grievances, okay so even if they knew it was set aside for industrial/commercial purposes, Amazon is a different kettle of fish from some industrial units or a business park, the constant coming & going of supply/delivery trucks being the main concern. The posters that call the people down at Duloch Park complainers would be doing the exact same moaning if you were in the same position so try, (I know it's difficult for you all) and show a bit of empathy for the residents of this part of town.

Report commentThe same concerns were raised by Crossgates residents about the opencast trucks cutting through Crossgates onto the M90 rather that using the Great North Road to get to the M90 via Belleknowes. Going by the number of trucks on that route, it would appear that the instruction is being adhered to, so maybe no panic yet.
Most 'Amazon' trucks, like those of Argos, B&Q etc actually belong to sub-contracted hauliers. Many are fitted with real-time GPS that shows the truck location, therefore proving, or disproving, where a vehicle was at an alleged time.
Maybe Amazon needs to actually open and operate first before problems are anticipated? But other posters are also correct - just because land has lain dormant for years (with industrial zoning consent) doesn't always guarantee your view, or house value, will remain as was. Got that T-shirt already!

Come on folks, this is obviously a blatant attempt by Docherty to stir up a bit of bother, where there is really none.
This guy seems to have a direct line to the 'Press, going by the amount of column inches this week's paper has of him.
You only have to read the story about him stirring up a load of nonsense about Alex Salmond going 'mental' during a visit to a local primary school.
This is the same guy who calls 999 when he thought that some of 'his' wine (paid for by the taxpayers) had gone missing during a pi55-up in the house of commons bar.

Report commentKaka - you're right. Indeed the quickest way to the motorway is to turn right out of Amazon, towards Dobbies etc, not turning left through the houses where there are more junctions, roundabouts, traffic islands etc to negotiate. Bearing in mind the problems last winter of Amazon deliveries going by Royal Mail, perhaps it will be the amount of red lorries rather than yellow ones that need worried about - if indeed there is a need to worry at all.

Report commentThe rat run will not affect any residents (though probably the planned housing Shepherd Offshore is shoehorning in off Sandpiper Drive as part of their get rich quick scam in buying the Hyundai site).
To be fair, Amazon was dumped in the area and planning permission and construction was lightening speed. The sheer scale alone takes away from the area (it was a nice part of Dunfermline, with massive houses in a green area next to the park and motorway). I do not live near the site, I used to work for Amazon in Greenock - they are only interested in making money, so lots of low paid jobs subsidised by the government via grants and lots of temp workers, lots and lots of temp workers. A lot of people will be keeping their jobs when the site move from Glenrothes, so I would not expect many jobs at all to be created there. I would also not advise anyone to work for them - expect to be thought of as a potential theif, so bag checks and pat downs every shift, CCTV, and little pay.

Report commentThe 'unregistered user' facility should be removed and only registered users should be allowed to make comments, this should have been in place from the very start. Why have a unregistered input anyway, it just ends up in unfunny verbal abuse, I'd register and post a lot more if I knew every board wasn't going to be hijacked by the dafties.

Could you please look to remove the 'Unregistered User' facility from your online comments boards, it is wide open to abuse and has a high percentage of abusive posts that have nothing whatsoever to do with any of your stories. Most news comments boards I've used only allow you to post a message once you have been fully signed up and this is what the Press need to do also. It would make it a lot easier to ban/block any user that is insulting, abusive or bullying it would also make it easier for the Moderator to control the site, thank you.
Copy and paste it if you want and email it in, get rid of these abusive, unfunny, unregistered (hee---hee, you know who you are) tw*ts!

Report commentI had a look at UJ's comments and he has a point that just because you have/had cancer does not make one brave. He is annoying with lots of inane comments spamming various boards.
Back to the story, I doubt that any existing residents need worry about the numerous coming and going that the Amazon distribution centre will create on Sandpiper Drive as they will use the Halbeath roundabout most if not all of the time.
My comment is that this paper keep calling Duloch Park, DEX. That temporary name is silly, outdated and takes up more space as the reporter has to then explain what DEX means. One then received numerous attacks for stating that.

Now on with the story. As far as I am concerned Duloch Park is part of DEX, it is not and never has been seperate. I have no objection if the lorries leaving Amazon go either through the designated route or through Rosyth to get to the Motorway interchange. I do not see an issue, its hardly going to involve hundreds of trucks!

Report commentIf this is what is going to happen with every story involving the eastern expansion, (off topic attacks on wherever people choose to live) they should just disable comments.
As for the point of registered/unregistered there is no real benefit to registering, once you pick a name no one else can use it anyway. However this means once you pick a screen name and choose to go unregistered you can't then go back and register that name, so maybe that's putting people off. The fact you need an email address either way would mean if it's possible to ban someone they could just now. IMO the Press are happy with it the way it is, they get some printable content for the letters page without the hassle of moderating a full blown forum.

Thanks for the comment, Matron. I try not to be negative to anyone, but was getting more than a little bit hacked off.
But back to the original thread subject.
I think that most of the traffic problems in the surrounding area of the Amazon building will arise during the construction phase to be honest.
With the cost of running a transport fleet plus the time constraints imposed by delivery schedules the trucks will logically have to use the most efficient route, and this would be the motorway

Report commentI have never read such narrow minded nonsense, really. What hope has a town like Dunfermline developing into a modern city if people from other parts of the town (which is not very big) feel they are different enough than another to throw hateful remarks to them. And vice versa. I have lived in the centre and in Duloch Park (DEX, tescoland, who cares!) along with other parts of the UK and as long as it is not full of petty minded folks who have been posting on this forum then I am happy. What matters to me is that I have a home where my family can grow up happy and safe and not pollutted by the views of people whos ideals seem only a hairs breadth away from xenophobia and other intolerant views. That is not to say that I do not have neighbours like that but guess what I choose to have nothing to do with them.

The REASON why there is so much scorn, bad feeling and deserved slagging being pointed toward the people of DEX is because a few narrowminded DEX residents are sheeting themselves thinking that maybe, perhaps, on an odd occasion, now and again a lorry, truck or van from Amazon (over a 1000 jobs and much needed investment to the local area by the way) may come past their house and cause a 5 -10 second disturbance.
They are living up there in their Ivory towers thinking because they spent over the odds for their houses that the rest of the Dunfermline and its economy has to suffer because of the remote chance a lorry might trundle past their front door.
THATS what its all about, not jealousy, not narrowmindedness, not xenophobia or anything of the kind, just other people of Dunfermline and the surounding area getting a little hacked off with all the moaning from the residents of DEX.
Thats all!

Report commentAfter working in alot of these houses in Duloch and seeing for myself how they all choose to be clones of each other ie same furniture, same 2-3 cars in the driveway, same memberships for the same gyms, same arrogant attitude to people who carry out an honest days work(for them) and yet they refuse to pay for it, right down to the same ornaments, same inability to get rid of the houses that are plagued with problems that they cant afford to pay for , oh yes and your kids that blight the woodland up there with their drinking and smashing glass bottles, cans and glass lying EVERYWHERE ( yes, Duloch residents these are you kids doing this)-- I personally couldnt give a hoot about the Duloch residents and their cardboard houses, postage stamp sized gardens and the views ( that most of them dont have except in to each others houses) that will be ruined.
My concerns are for the those who have been residents there for hundreds of years ie the herd of deer who populate the woods & fields behind the former hyundai building and the surrounding area. When they decide to start building houses on the former property and traffic is roaring up and down these roads what will they do? Will they be trapped in that area and not be able to move elsewhere or maybe the companies building up there will organise a cull of these beautiful creatures. They have been there longer than any of you and have not blighted that area in all that time and I think they deserve more help and support and protecting from this ridiculous house building frenzy and preserve their land so they can continue to live there quietly and safely!!!!

"1000 jobs and much needed investment to the local area" It has already been discussed above that Amazon is only there due to the Scottish Government and Fife Council paying them after they wanted to close down their Glenrothes site as it was only there due to earlier grants. Most people from Glenrothes will commute to Dunfermline, leaving less jobs than one might think - low hundreds, and most min wage.
"spent over the odds for their houses" - houses in Duloch are cheap when compared to similar areas in Scotland, England, Ireland, Netherlands etc. You have a jealous chip on you shoulder my dear.
"all the moaning from the residents of" Duloch Park. So you though you would moan back? Personally I have little to do with the rest of Dunfermline - driving through it mainly. The town centre has no decent shops, the High Street and surrounding area has some nice old houses, but the area is plagued with chavs.

One can say the same about working class homes. In their 'living room', 'lounge' or if very common 'front room', one will find a massive TV (at least 50''), SKY TV (dish outside larger than the house), oversize mismatched furniture - massive sofa or in their parlance a 'couch', no books (who needs to learn anything?), plastic flooring aka laminate (who needs wood when you can have plastic flooring made to look like wood), a fat child watching some inappropriate tv channel with their guardians (parents probably divorced), benefit books in the kitchen, tacky 'ornaments' everywhere - even in the garden (if have one and not concreted over, gnomes, 'angels', 'fairies', sometimes with solar lights so their vulgar taste can be seen at night, depends what is in the pound shops), kitchens full of cheap food from Farmfoods/Iceland/ASDA. One would say you have just described the vast majority of homes within Duloch.....I particuarly like your opening sentence ""One can say the same about working class homes" are a high proportion of residents within "DEX" not working class or does a move into a rabbit hutch within siad area automatically guarantee you "middle-upperclass status" regardless of career and income...it would seem "my dear" that there are many people ,yourself included, that suffer from this very sad and desperate affliction called a superiority complex!!!! I will also like to highlight what I siad again ie I have carried out alot of work in alot of houses all over the Duloch estate ( & they also fill their cupboards with food from Farmlands/Iceland/Asda & even Aldis) as I have all over the Dunfermline area but it seems that the "working class" that you so despise that dont live in the aforementioned area will always ensure they pay for work..I have never had to chase the "working class" for payment unfortunatly I cannot say the same thing about the DEX residents who have given me the biggest headaches when it comes to parting with their money!!
Now excuse me while i go take a stroll round my 5 bedroom country house with 10 acres of gardens(bought and payed for) and look out of the window at ...oh look I cant see any other houses for miles and miles!!!! As stated earlier I am only interested in what will happen to the deer & buzzards in that area who dont suffer from this serious class affliction that many of the two legged animals in your area do!!!

What do the deer and buzzards think about having someone take up so much land to build themself a house in the middle of their countryside? I bet they are delighted at that.
May I also suggest that if people are not paying you it is probably because you are not doing a good enough job. Maybe less time snooping in people's cupboards and more time focussing on the job in hand, or is that you charge by the hour.
If you need to feel better about yourself try doing it by other means that belittling a whole section of people that are just living their lives with their families the best they can. You could try a hobby, perhaps Interior Design - you seem to have a critical eye.

At which point did I say my house was a new build? There are houses that exist that are vastly older than 1-10 years old, not everything is newly built...and the deer and the buzzards are free to roam where they like where I live. As for the work I do, they dont complain about the standard of work ( which is always of a high standard) they just never have the money when it comes time to pay and yes it does involve having to go into peoples cupboards at times....and Im afraid I was not the one who used the phrase " working Class" as if it was something dirty and too be ashamed of!!

And there ladies and gentlemen of the board is the future of Dunfermline, he/she lives in the the Chicken Huts, pushes house prices up to the point where 1st time buyers can't get on the property ladder, can't really afford to live in Embra where he/she is based so uses the Embra overspill (DEX) and commutes, has nothing to do with the actual local area of Dunfermline, moans and whinges about the neds/chavs etc but won't be part of the solution. I really and sincerely hope that isn't the attitude of the majority of DEX residents, if it is then the great city of Dunfermline is doomed, doooooomed i tells ye!

If the Police and the courts have become toothless when it comes to reprehending chavs, then what options are left for Joe Public to deal with them, Smarmygit? What part of the solution you speak of do you play?
I'd have thought that now that the first DEX houses are out of their 10 year NHBC warranty (as worthless as that 'guarantee' is -pffft) then the stigma attached to them would have gone. Still, when the town expands to the West that'll give people something else to bleat about, and those in the East can quietly get on with life. Or maybe not.

Report commentI think it's fine that all these people want to slag off the DEX, I'm all for freedom of speech and that. It's just a pity they hide behind the anonymity that the internet gives you. If you want to slag off where I live, good for you, just tell my where you reside and I'll offer my opinions on that. #spineless

Report commentJust to clarify the two words above that were helpfully blacked out, rhymed with blag but started with an s. Blanket censorship can never understand context.

Report commentBob, being part of the solution is being part of your local community, you know, helping out instead of just saying its all everyone elses fault/problem and let the polis and the courts sort them oot.
Just a few weeks ago there was a story about the apathy of a local community when it came to Inverkeithing Gala, thats what i'm on about. There was outrage, 'why oh why did this have to happen' when in reality the locals couldn't be ar**d.
Get yersels involved with local projects, local community councils etc etc and have a voice, it may just be a little one but instead of being one of the many on here that are always whinging on about all the wrongs of society try and help to be part of the solution, THATS what i'm on about!
By one posters own admission on here QUOTE Personally I have little to do with the rest of Dunfermline - driving through it mainly UNQUOTE says it all, why moan when they can't be ar**d with the place they live in?

Report commentFair does - in that case I must be one of those you admire rather than criticise as I support several local initiatives personally and financially.

Welcome to Duloc,
such a perfect town.
Here we have some rules,
let us lay them down
Don’t make waves, stay in line,
and we’ll get along fine.
Duloc is the perfect place.
Please keep off of the grass.
Shine your shoes, wipe your…face.
Duloc is, Duloc is, Duloc is the perfect place!
Ironic?
