Smash-hit 'Chicago' coming to Alhambra
ANOTHER blockbuster musical is coming to Dunfermline's Alhambra Theatre - tickets are now sale for the West End smash-hit 'Chicago'.
The glittering show is coming to town during the festive season running from 10th to 15th December and starring Ali Bastian, formerly of 'Strictly Come Dancing' and 'Hollyoaks'.
The news comes fast on the heels of the announcement that the venue had attracted another all-time classic musical, Grease, which comes here in September.
It is estimated the Prohibition era story of murder, greed, gangsters, corruption, exploitation and treachery - featuring songs such as 'All That Jazz' and 'Razzle Dazzle' - has been seen by audiences of 17 million worldwide. It has grossed £120 million in London since opening there in 1997.
Claire Fletcher, PR Manager for the Alhambra, commented, "Chicago is one of the most popular smash hit musicals and we are absolutely thrilled to be playing host to the show this December."
'Chicago' is the kiss-and-tell story of chorus girl Roxie Hart who kills her lover, glamorous double-murderer Velma Kelly and Billy Flynn, the slick and manipulative lawyer keeping them from death row while promising to make them stars.
It has all the topicality of our celebrity-seeking times and also provides some of the most sensational roles in all musical theatre.
For decades, Broadway and West End audiences have razzled and dazzled by Chicago, which is based on real life events back in the roaring Twenties.
Nightclub singer Roxie shoots her lover and along with cell block rival Velma, they fight to keep from death row with the help of smooth talking lawyer, Billy Flynn.
Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb and legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, Chicago has sexy, sassy score and has won six Tony, two Olivier, one Grammy, two Bafta and six Academy Awards.
Ali Bastian has been a star on British TV screens for over nine years, having played the long-running roles of Becca in 'Hollyoaks' and Sally Armstrong in 'The Bill'.
More recently, Ali took part in the 2009 series of BBC's Strictly Come Dancing where she reached the semi-finals.
Chicago opened at the Adelphi Theatre in London on 18 November 1997 to rave reviews, winning the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for 'Outstanding Musical Production' as well as the 1998 Critics Circle Drama Award for 'Best Musical' and immediately became a sell-out hit.
The musical has just entered its 15th year in London and is currently also playing in New York and Spain. This is first time the show has appeared in Fife.
The UK Tour of Chicago will be produced by David Ian Productions in association with the Broadway producers Barry and Fran Weissler.
