FOOTBALLERS enjoying a weekly kick-about at Pitreavie saw their friendly match turn into a 20-man brawl when they were attacked by a gang of drunken thugs.

The victims were taking part in their weekly seven-a-side game on the astroturf pitches at Dunfermline's Academy of Sport.

Their match turned into mayhem when the drunken neds began throwing golf balls and bags as they hurled abuse at the players before the confrontation turned physical.

One player was left with a broken tooth and others with bumps and bruises as the game descended into a mass brawl.

One terrified player, who wished to remain anonymous, said, "There were around 12 to 15 teenagers sitting by the nursery next to the astroturf pitches.

"They made their way over to the fence and started chucking stuff at us on the pitch like golf balls and a bag. One guy who was playing stuck it behind the goals and told them they would get it back after our game was finished.

"That's when it all kicked off and they went into one of the wee five-a-side pitches and tried to get into our pitch.

"One of the balls went over and when our guy went across they all squared up and lamped him. Then our guys jumped over their side and a 20-man brawl ensued.

"I was trying to get folk off our pitch and inside to get the police. The neds must have seen the police lights coming and they scarpered.

"It was absolute madness and I've never seen anything like that in my life. We are there every week and this is the first time we've had trouble ever."

The player left with a broken tooth added, "It was unreal. At 10pm you'd think they'd have better things to do than sit and wind up boys trying to play football. It started off harmless but escalated.

"I got a nice crack in the face and now have half a tooth missing.

"You just don't expect these things to happen.

"I'll get on with it and still play. It's happened and that's that. I'm one of the older ones of the group.

"There are a few younger boys who play and something like this can definitely put them off."
