TWO men were caught stealing a cherry picker in Newmills after footage of the theft appeared on YouTube.

William Allison, 44, and Ian Dolan, 41, both of Airdrie, were caught on a CCTV camera nicking the £7,000 vehicle from a yard.

The pair were caught after a member of public saw the footage and contacted Crimestoppers leading to a police investigation.

The vehicle, valued at £7,000 was stolen in 2010.

Both men appeared at Dunfermline Sheriff Court on Thursday. Allison was jailed for 12 months and Dolan for 11 months.

Detective Sergeant Jimmy Adamson, who led the enquiry, said, "I would like to thank the public for their assistance in this enquiry which led to the arrest of these two men.

"The widespread use of social media has become an important tool for the modern day police officer and the results shown in this case are clear evidence of this.

More than 2000 people have watched the video.
