East End Park to host market
DUNFERMLINE is to get a new marketplace - East End Park!
The Pars ground is set to host a twice-weekly market, on Tuesdays and Fridays, outside the stadium behind the Norrie McCathie stand starting this summer.
The markets will run for a sixmonth trial period and the first one could be held as soon as mid-June.
Dunfermline Athletic executive director Karen Masterton confirmed that operators Scorpion GB Limited would run the market, which would be a mix of stalls and car boot sales.
She told the Press, "We've been hoping to get it started for a while now and it's going to be run for us by Scorpion GB, who used to run the Kinross Market.
"They are renting the space from us and it's going to run for a trial period of six months, to make sure it all runs smoothly.
"We'll review it and if it's successful - we hope it will be! - we will continue it.
"We've been working on this a considerable time to get this through the planning process but hopefully that's it all finalised.
"We have just a couple of small things to get ironed out and we'll hopefully get it sorted and running by the middle of June."
And with the Pars having to tighten their belt following the club's relegation from the SPL, the market is expected to help boost the club coffers.
Karen added, "The operators approached us because it's a fantastic site to run a market and we're very pleased it's come to fruition.
"It's got a very high volume of traffic and it helps the club enormously because of the rental.
"We run a stadium 365 days a year, it's a great site and is another way of generating income for us.
"Litter will not be a problem as the operator will have to tidy it up and there should not be any impact on parking or congestion."
Traffic restrictions will be put on for the market, with no waiting from Garvock Hill to Lambert Drive between 10am-4pm on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Report commentThat's great with it being weekdays and not the weekend. I'll certainly be interested as I have a lot of quality stuff to sell. Superb!

Report commentI cannot see any benefits in this whatsoever and I find it quite appalling to find out about this in the press given the fact I am a Halbeath Road resident. Does East End Park not think that Halbeath Road is congested enough without adding to the problems outwith match days! Not to mention the environmental problems this will cause, especially with the recent monitoring of air pollution near Appin Cresent due to the congestions on Halbeath Road. Having a market will bring cars, congestion, noise and cause havock for parking. This quite simply is a money generator and I for one certainly hope this is withdrawn after the 6 month trial period due to the wider implications!

Report comment@annoyed resident, East End Park openly admit that this is a money earning trial. Like any other business theses days they are looking to diversify to bring in much needed income. They have also stated that both traffic and litter issues have been considered and that measures will be in place to deal with it. Many football grounds are now used for events other than football, East End Park is not alone in introducing this. Was the football stadium not there when you bought your house?

Report commentIt is fact of life; initiate a change in access, provision or facility and this will automatically trigger the NIMBYs in that locale!
Dunfermline has needed a 'general market' for years although I would not bet on the longevity of this venture given the current financial situation!
Markets of this ilk may have had their heyday; today they have to compete with Pound Shops and 'cheap as chips' clothing retailers!
I am not praying for failure; however I remain just a tad sceptical.

Report commentAs soon as I read 'market' I thought fantastic, this really is something the town could do with. But then I read 'car boot' and that was that... It'll be full of old smelly clothes and plastic toys for kids. Fresh food and hand made crafts similar to (better than) the farmers market would be a far better option.

Report commentThe space behind the Norrie stand doesn't offer a lot of space for a market? Will people living around the stadium go to this market? Will anyone travel to it especially? It's a bit tucked out of the way to attract passing trade either! Nut - bad idea, not thought through - dross!! Who thinks up this nonsense?

Report commentRe Annoyed Resident/Blackadder. I too am a Halbeath Road resident and am pretty cheesed off, (not altogether surprised with DAFCs track record though), about having a market at East End Park sprung on us with no consultation. Blackadder has jumped to the basest of arguments whenever residents of HR complain about some of the activities of DAFC. "Was the football stadium not there when you bought your house?" (Oh dear). Oh yes, over the years the club themselves has made this very statement, it is neither constructive, business like or even adult. Yes of course the the stadium was here when we bought our houses and yes, we know fine that during the football season in the main, every second weekend many of us are unable to receive visitors due to the apparent free parking the pavements not just on HR provide for the football attendees but in many of the surrounding roads. It seems that this is a given right that neither police, council or club are overly concerned about. This of course is not to mention that often our front gardens become no go zones due to the large minority of idiots that insist on chanting at full tilt, shouting, swearing and even abuse getting hurled at you as you go about your own business on your own property. But in the past twenty -thirty years Football has become something well beyond a game. When many residents bought, they knew fine well that there would be some disruption, games would be played with a 15:00 hr kick off every second weekend within the season. Outwith those times we would have peace, perfect peace. But not now, we have to kowtow to the whims of every business venture/activity that this club decides (no consultation has ever been entered into with residents) to try. That my friend Blackadder is what renders your statement impotent/childish/purile/misguided/ignorant/misinformed, need I go on?
Blackadder also states that "They have also stated that both traffic and litter issues have been considered and that measures will be in place to deal with it." I am actually laughing out loud at this statement, why? Because, if this is going to be dealt with in the same way they do for home matches then that amounts to nothing. I am often left picking up bottles/cans containing perhaps alcohol, perhaps re-processed alcohol, if you get my drift, so good job DAFC. Being kind, the measures in place for home games is far from satisfactory so I suspect that there will be similar arrangements for the markets. As with many things DAFC/East End Park, they state much and then do nothing.
More than anything DAFC has over the years said that they are a "community orientated club" I ask an open question then, whose community? It certainly is not the community in which they operate and that is a fact of life, the first that residents in the locale knew about the market, (for example), was some amateur hour notices tied on to a few lamposts around the area.
Whilst I have no truck with any business trying to make some income in these hard times, businesses that show no respect to those around them do not deserve to thrive. Once they start to engage those that live close to them then perhaps they will have earned those stripes, until then, I wish then every failure.
We are now in the 21st Century, the question that needs to be asked is it really suitable for operations of the magnitude of a Premier league (as was) football club to be operation in a mainly residential area. There are many clubs, forward thinking one might saay, in Scotland who actually took these issues on board and moved to the outskirts of the towns they operate in to solve many of the issues mentioned above, St Johnstone, Falkirk (yes, really) and a few more I'll warrant.
I am willing to stand corrected of course but if I recall correctly DAFC did have a golden opportunity in years gone by to move lock stock and barrel to the Pitreavie playing fields area. Let me think now, motorway transport links, the ability to make proper considerations for parking, far enough away from residentail housing so as not to impinge on the peace and quite of Joe Blogs who enjoys a weekends peace and quiet etc etc. But no! Not DAFC to stuck in the mud and just to damn selfish to those around them.
In brief Blackadder and anyone else sharing those views, don't comment on what you do not truly understand and as for your childish remarks, well, leave them in playgroup.

Report commentshock shock get over yourself, you are the one still in the playground spitting out your dummy because of your naivety I've lived in the vicinity of a football ground and a nightclub and the flightpath of an airport, it's the areas where properties are cheaper, why are you under any illusions that Dunfermline is any different. Having said that many areas come at one price or another. Just because you didn't have the foresight to see the possibilities or opportunities of change there is no need to take your frustration out on others. Just as you feel DAFC should have upsticks maybe you could do the same and move to the moral highground at the edge of town. There is a reason that the acronym NIMBY was coined, take a look in the mirror. That, my friend, is what renders your statement impotent/childish/purile/misguided/ignorant and misinformed.
