Three men rescued from Forth
THREE young men had to be rescued after going for a swim in the Forth on Sunday night.
They became stranded at Carlingnose Pier, a disused wooden structure cut off from land near the Inverkeithing - North Queensferry coastal path.
A fourth man who had been swimming made it back to shore where he raised the alarm.
They were aged between 17 and 21 and are believed to be local to the area.
Two of the men were taken to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy as a precaution after swallowing sea water.
Ross MacKay, from RNLI Queensferry, said, "After an assessment the team decided they should be checked over by a doctor.
"It is tempting to go into the water to cool down on a hot day.
"But swimming anywhere in the Forth without supervision carries dangers, it's cold and there are strong currents.
"The most important thing is they managed to call 999 so the coastguard could get to them."
A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed that both a rapid response unit and an ambulance crew were dispatched to the scene.

Report commentShould the powers that be not consider demolishing what's left of the old Carlingnose pier? It serves no purpose and is obviously a temptation to youngsters to swim out to etc? If memory serves me correctly from my distant youth, before they knocked down the first half of it, and you could walk out to the end for fishing etc, the water there is very deep? Don't know who would be responsible for demolition, but it must be someone?

Report commentLet's get a few things straight.
1. MOST young people DO have plenty common sense
2. No public money was wasted, it was worse than that, a charity's money (the RNLI) and a volunteer crew were put at risk because of these eejits

Report commentAs the daughter of someone who was an electrician for the RNLI many years ago, I am aware of just how much cash is WASTED by the RNLI, on their own decision - parts being disposed of instead of repaired. Incidents like this just magnify the waste of money donated to them. The persons involved in this case should be fined for misuse of a rescue service.

Report commentThe old pier belongs to Scottish Wildlife Trust and is an important nesting site for sea birds such as terns.

Report commentCan i just point out- nowhere does it say anyone was drinking so its a bit presumptuous that you assume that this incident was drink related unless that information was mentioned elsewhere?
Yes it was irresponsible to go swimming and get stranded and have to call for help but is that not what the RNLI is for? The main thing is that everyone is ok and I'm sure they will have learned from this. It was beautiful weather over the weekend and I saw many people swimming in the forth so it could have happened to anyone but blaming "youngsters" is unfair as they aren't all bad!

Report commentThanks for the clarification Cenobite, however it's a judgement required, as far as leaving or pulling down the old pier don't you think?
I suppose it comes down to which you think is more valuable, a nesting site for boring sea birds or a temptation for youngsters to drown?
The terns would find somewhere else to nest, I'm sure they did before the pier was built and would after it is pulled down. I don't think you're argument of an "important" nesting site for terns would be much comfort to a grieving parent that may have to bury their child?

Report commentFirstly,It is a listed building(B Grade) and has huge historical value.Secondly,This is the first incident of its kind in at least 20 possibly 30 odd years involving the pier.As the area is a SSSI,I think the birds actually do take precedence....unfortunately the terns probably wouldnt find anywhere else to nest in the area (predation/human disturbance)and as a result these migratory birds would no longer be seen here.So actually it does serve a purpose!
Thanks for taking an interest in my post SOT...bless xx

Report commentHistorical value? The old "half a pier?" Hmmm, you think?
Buildings that are a danger to the public tend to get demolished, listed or not!
First time in 20 years or so that kids have nearly drowned is one time too many I reckon! Anyway, how many people pay any heed to the terns, or have seen them? I wouldn't know a tern from a seagull (are they a type of seagull?) SSSI's are a wee bit the weapon of choice of tree huggers, vegans and crusty old hippies! "Oooh there's grasses of special interest or a toad with a particular croak etc...." always as a control/ reason to stop building or demolition or some sort of progress or improvement?
Again as I said, it's a judgement call, possible loss of human life over a nesting site for some birds that hardly anyone notices? Nature and the tides in the Forth will eventually take the old pier away, I only hope that no-one drowns attempting to swim out to it in the mean time!
I did find your post interesting though and to be fair, you know your stuff - even if we aren't going to agree!
Thanks for the blessing too Cbt! x

Report commentThats a wonderfully disdainfull attitude you have there regarding Flora and Fauna. You may not notice it but plenty of locals and people from further afield certainly do!
How would the demolition of this wartime pier be progress or an improvement? It would not only be detrimental to seabirds but it would also destroy an already fragile ecosystem under the sea(crustaceans etc) in and around the legs.
If the knee-jerk reaction is to knock this thing down as a result of a couple of kids and their obvious lack of common sense(sheer stupidity)...then why not fill in Preston quarry, knock down the old piers by the wood yard in Inverkeithing, ban people from going onto Cramond Island, stop people walking along the promenade in Kirkcaldy.
Sorry but i find your stance nonsensical.
Finally, to answer your question regarding whether they are a type of gull.....they were seen as a subfamily of gulls but with a seperate genus....(more closely related to waders than gulls in evolutionary terms)
