DRIVERS across South West Fife area have been warned by police after a number of break-ins to unlocked vehicles.

Detective Sergeant Christopher Mill, who is in charge of the investigating team, said, "Most car crime can be avoided and the hassle and misery of a break-in can avoided by taking some common sense measures.

"We are working hard to catch the thieves and are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry to catch those responsible, however, we need the public's help to report any suspicious activity to the police or to Crimestoppers.

"Satellite navigation systems are still popular with motorists and because they are on display they become more popular with thieves.

"Make sure you disconnect and remove your sat-nav every time you leave your car and remember to remove the suction mounted fittings and don't leave the tell-tale suction mark on the window."

Fife Constabulary also recommends the following to avoid inviting thieves to make you their next victim:

Remove all items of value from the car or put them out of sight.

Try to park in well-lit areas where your car is easily seen.

Be aware of anybody showing interest in your car or its contents.

Always set the alarm or immobilising device you have fitted.

Always lock your vehicle.

Further information and advice can be obtained by contacting Community Safety Officer PC Keith McLeod, who is based at Dalgety Bay Police Station on 01383 318940.

If anyone has any information on individuals committing these or similar crimes then contact Fife Ppolice on 0845 600 5702 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111''.
