ROGUE CIA agents breaking people out of a Russian prison and ex-military mercenaries carrying out a dirty war against Afghan insurgents - it's fair to assume that West Fife's newest published author does not get his ideas for his thriller novels simply by looking out the window of his Limekilns home.

Will Jordan (29) currently works as a web designer for Sky, but he may soon be able to turn his writing hobby into a full-time career after he landed a three book deal with publishing giants Random House.

The first book of the deal, Redemption, launched last month and Will has been encouraged by the positive response he has received from critics so far.

The former Woodmill High School pupil nurtured his creativity by writing short stories and posting them on internet messageboards, and after getting some great feedback he realised he had a bit of flair for writing and decided to turn his hand to penning a novel.

He said, "I started doing it as a bit of a laugh really, but I really enjoyed doing it and by writing the short stories I came up with some ideas that I found really interesting and wanted to explore."

Redemption tells the story of Ryan Drake, an ex-British Army soldier now working as a CIA agent whose job is to track down missing agents and find out what happened to them.

He manages to successfully break one out of jail on a mission in Russia but things quickly take a turn for the worse and Drake and his new associate are forced to go on the run while they try to make sense of the chaos happening all around them.

Will is an avid reader of thriller novels - as well as the Press - and once he gets an idea he does not wait around to get it down on paper. He wrote the next book in his Ryan Drake series, Sacrifice, in just four months while balancing the writing with his full-time job and family life.

As well as his day job at Sky, Will is kept busy looking after his two-year-old son Daniel with his wife Susan and he believes that writing the novels acts as the perfect form of escapism from daily life.

He said, "The hardest part is trying to fit the writing around the rest of my life. Between having a full-time job and looking after my son I need to be very disciplined with my time.

"I have always enjoyed thriller novels and Clive Cussler style adventure stories, so when I set out to write something I wanted it to be something that I would enjoy reading.

"I learn bits and pieces about what I'm writing about beforehand, but I need to be pretty specific about where I'm going with the story before I start,"

Will is planning five books for the Ryan Drake series, and Sacrifice - the second book in the series - focuses on the war in Afghanistan. Set during the financial meltdown of 2008 it tells the story of private military companies taking over the war effort as the major international powers realise that they can no longer afford to continue.

Drake is sent in to investigate private companies who are not bound by the same regulations as national armies and as a result begin waging a dirty war in the desert.

Will's first book, Redemption, is available at Waterstone's and WH Smith, as well as online via amazon.co.uk.
