Ladies sought for Highland fling!
LADIES, get ready for a Highland fling on 4th August as the Inverkeithing Highland Games rolls into town.
This year's Games are short of women's tug-o'-war teams and former chieftain Hank John is hoping West Fife ladies are up for the challenge.
Hank, now in charge of publicity and marketing for the Games, said, "We are looking for women's teams, as there are none this year!
"There's no set number per team but it's usually between six and eight people."
The historic Games - first mentioned in the burgh records of 1652 - promise plenty of excitement for participants and visitors of all ages, with everything from Highland dancing and cycling to kids' races and heavyweight events.
The fun gets underway at 11.30am, with a pipe band parade from the Civic Centre to Ballast Bank, and chieftain Bill Galloway will open the Games at 12.30pm.
However, Highland dance fans should get there early, as the pre-premier dancing starts at 10.30am. The intermediate and premier events will be held at 1.30pm.
The track and field events kick off at 1pm, with races for local kids beginning at 3.15pm.
The array of heavyweight events include putting the 16lb/22lb ball, throwing the 16lb/22lb hammer, throwing the 28lb weight by distance, throwing the 56lb weight by distance and height, tossing the caber, tug-of-war and the 60m Heilan' Man's Dash.
In addition, there are the local and open tug-o'-war competitions and contests for pipe bands, solo piping and drum majors.
The finale will be a pipe band march past, playing 'Hail to the Chief' at 5pm.
The Games regularly attract more than 4000 spectators, and Hank is hoping similar numbers will turn up.
He said, "It's always a very wonderful day out for the family and we get visitors from Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, Ireland.
"We're very proud of the Games and look forward to welcoming meeting people from all over the world."
Tickets cost £6 (£3 concessions; £10 family).
