FIFE police are seeking help to catch a callous thief who coaxed his way into an 83-year-old Dunfermline woman's house and stole her purse.

The robber talked himself into the woman's house in Nith Street about 3pm yesterday (Thursday).

Having entered the back garden, he knocked at the back door and, when answered, claimed that he could do some work on her house. The thief was allowed to enter and stole the woman's purse, which had been within the kitchen.

Detective Inspector David Russell, who is leading the enquiry, said, "This is a despicable, callous crime carried out on a vulnerable member of our society. The victim of this theft, although not physically hurt, was clearly distressed.

"This theft happened in a residential area and there would have been a number of people walking nearby.

"The thief is described as a 20-25-years-old man, of slim build with short blonde hair. He was wearing a light coloured zip up hooded top with similar coloured jogging trousers.

"I would ask anyone who may have seen someone of this, or similar description, or a man acting suspiciously in this area or, indeed, anyone who has any information in relation to this heartless crime, to contact us on 0800 600 5702 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
