Faster broadband for Oakley and Newmills
Newmills and Oakley are to benefit from faster broadband as part of upgrade plans from BT.
BT are rolling out their next generation of broadband service delivered copper lines.
The investment will make available download speeds of up to 20 megabits per second (Mbps) - more than double the fastest speed previously available from BT.
By next Spring it is hoped that around 73 per cent of homes and businesses in Scotland will be upgraded to these higher speeds.
Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment Alex Neil said, "It is vital that local businesses and households have access to high-speed sophisticated communications.
"Just like roads and railways, broadband is a vital part of Scotland's infrastructure, and that is why the Scottish Government is currently progressing plans to develop a world class digital infrastructure by 2020."

Report commentIronically Alex Neil is talking up something that the Tories in Westminster invested in. I don't support either, just mentioning in the interests of balance.

Report commentAs a matter of interest, what is the current rate of unemployment in these towns since the area's biggest employer (the pits) closed ?
Wouldn't it be much better for the government to invest millions in British industry to make it something to be proud of again, rather than making sure everyone has a superfast broadband connection ??
What gives better satisfaction in the long term ?
A job, financial security and other associated benefits, or high speed internet ?

Report commentPicks and shovels built the world, Drew.
If it weren't for them, there'd be no infrastructure.
Wouldn't it have been much better if some Scots had been involved in making the steel and the sections for the new aircraft carriers, rather than just bolting them together ?
Wouldn't it be nice to go back to the days when Scotland actually made things, rather than being a nation of consumers ?
Infrastructure is all well and good, but 20 meg broadband doesn't create jobs.
Industry would

Report commentSpeeds of upto 20MBps on copper is ADSL2+ this service has been available from Sky and TalkTalk(cpw) in the NewOakley exchange since June2011, and in Newmills since August 2011, so this is just BT catching up with some of its competitors,
This does not mean Fibre Optic / decent speed broadband it just means if your are close enough to the exchange (under 5KM from the exchange) with new wires you may be able to get 10-12mb speeds, if you currently get less than 6MB/connection with your current provider this infrastrucure roll out will not increase your speed at all.
