A SOLICITOR accused of trying to smuggle mobile phones and drugs into Edinburgh's Saughton prison made his first appearance in open court today (Tuesday).

David Blair Wilson (54) of 46 Edgar Street, Dunfermline, denies the charges against him and has lodged papers in court blaming another person.

During a brief hearing at the High Court in Edinburgh Edward Targowski QC, defending, told judge Lord Bannatyne there was further preparation to be done before Blair Wilson was ready for trial.

The solicitor is due back in court next month when, it is expected, a trial date will be fixed.

Blair Wilson denies a total of nine charges, all dating back to 6th October last year when he was said to be visiting a prisoner in Saughton in his professional capacity.

The contraband items were allegedly hidden in a folder which, it is said, he tried to bring into the jail.

The articles listed in the charges include three mobile telephones, three SIM cards, cannabis resin, diazepam, drostanolone propionate, testosterone propionate and trenbolone acetate, along with 10 plastic syringes, and buprenorphine tablets.

The charges allege breaches of the Prisons (Scotland) Act and the Misuse of Drugs Act.
