Trading Standards have warned West Fife residents, particularly the elderly, to be on their guard when employing cold calling tradesmen to work for them.

Dunfermline Central councillor Neale Hanvey repeated the warning after a recent spate of this type of advertising in his area.

He said, "Door step selling is getting quite sophisticated. I recently received a flyer though the door appearing to offer a grant for elderly people.

"I would urge anyone to use traders that have been personally recommended or discuss such offers with their family. Unfortunately if it seems too good to be true, it often is."

Fife Council operates a Trusted Trader scheme where you can find a list of businesses who have agreed to trade fairly and will not cold call.

To find a local Trusted Trader visit www.fifedirect.org.uk/trustedtrader or call 01592 583141. To report problems with doorstep callers contact Trading Standards via 08454 040506.
