Park pool dismantled
PITTENCRIEFF Park's disused paddling pool has disappeared after diggers began work on the £1.6million restoration of the Glen.
The paddling pool, which has not been in use for many years for health and safety reasons, has been dismantled and the concrete around it removed.
Seating will be installed around the trees overlooking the pool and it is hoped there may be the opportunity to mark the site of an old well if it is located during the course of the work.
The restoration project has received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with matching support from the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust and Fife Council.
This is the first of 29 restoration and improvement projects that are planned for the park over the next two years.

Report commentAfter visiting the Peacock Rooms last Saturday on a lovely sunny day the rooms where not busy at all, so we need to do something to attract visitors into the park,we need to stop thinking in the PAST but think to the FUTURE what family and kids like to do today, they like to INTERACT with things,so building a Peacock Santury is not really a good idea that would bring tourists in, better with either a East Links Family Park(Smaller Scale Version in Dunfermline/Maybe Less Animals) idea which would bring loads of tourists in just like it does for my hometown of Dunbar.
I also think my idea of Go Ape/Tree Zone is a perfect idea for the older kids to do in the park as there lots of trees to use for this , My idea would would be to split the park into two parts left hand side of the park which would include the Glen,The Glasshouse & Gardens,Pittencrieff House etc for historic part and right hand side having interactive features for the kids & families i know you maybe say that this may ruin the park but we need to move to the future regarding this as my hometown of Dunbar has,i know also that you will say that Andrew Carnegie has left the park to the people of Dunfermline and i should be left the way it is, but the park where East Links Family Park is in a histroric park it's self, the park is called John Muir Country Park.
I would also have Go Ape/Treezone in Lovers Loan and this would also bring in tourist with older children as well, i would create a tourist shop/hub for both these ventures which could be the part of the Glen Pavilion or one of the disused building at that part of the park.
I have been to many a tourist destination in the United Kingdom and feel that Dunfermline is falling behind the rest of of the United Kingdom and Scotland with not putting these idea's into place so bringing the park into the 21 st century as a tourist destination.

2.Part of the Glen Pavillion or some of these disused buildings could be used a HUB for the new tourist attractions so increasing the footfall to the Peacock Rooms ect.
3.Better signage needed in the park of where the walks go to and history behind it.
4.We have T In Park every year just ten minutes up the road but we do nothing to chip in on it and we could have a tourist attraction like T in the Glen or something and use the stage at the back of the Glen Pavillion to showcase live bands like the Draymin ect.
We could install covered seats into the stoned stairways that are already there at the back of the Glen Pavilion so we could have a open air theater which could also be used for local theater companies to do live shows or a open air summer cinema which would be a tourist attraction as well.

5.Better lighting at the gates and the tourist attractions within the park.

6.Do away with the paddling pool as it is eyesore and replace it with a kids water play are just like they have in Burnt Island Park.
7.Don't bring back the train and replace it with a education centre like one at Dobbie's Garden Centre so that families and tourists can get information about the history of the park what animals and plants that are in the park.
I have been to many a tourist destination in the United Kingdom and feel that Dunfermline is falling behind the rest of of the United Kingdom and Scotland with not putting these idea's into place so bringing the park into the 21 st century as a tourist destination.
Well that my suggestions to improve your park and bring it into the 21 Century as a tourist attraction that Andrew Carnegie would be proud of.
Thanks for listening i am just trying to suggest improvement to make Dunfermline a better place for me,you and all the new people moving to Dunfermline like i did myself over 10 years ago and also all the tourists that we could attract.
I just want us to think proactive for Dunfermline for a change instead of living in the Past we got a amazing opportunity to make Dunfermline great.

Report commentIt is really rather a huge, waste of precious space..Mr. Carnegie i am sure would turn in his grave if he saw it now. I do though understand that there are many people fighting for projects to happen here including staff who are employed by Fife Council and work in the park. Fingers crossed that good stuff is to come but sadly Fife Council are just a joke..we all know this, they care nothin for this town...it is the people tryin to keep this place the way that it always has been known but sometimes and more wonder if it's a losing battle. I guess though that the only way forward is to try stay positive and trust in the people..no thanks need to be given to FC....Well done to everyone though who keep our spirits up!

Report commentI can see why they got rid of it, firstly we dont really get a decent Summer anymore & it costs to upkeep but im sure most of the readers remember using it as children. I remember it was well used, families having picnics while the kids splashed about.

Report commentthe pools arent used anymore as parents keep children to sheltered these days. There was probably the same bacteria in them in the 50s yet we went regularly with our parents and were never ill. the bottom of the pool was well known for being slippy but we just wore our black gym shoes problem sorted. every where i go you can see mums out with the baby wipes the second their little one gets something on their hands or face.so they are probably better taking the pools away and save cost of upkeep. The glen isnt used by families like it used to be which is a shame, maybe its just easier to sit in the cinema or play games on the xbox etc rather than kick a football or play rounders

Report commentIt's not used cos it's always pushing down with rain. Clearly in the good old days when bacteria was friendly the sun always shone.

Report commentMaybe could build a paddling pool which is housed in a green house
Under a glass roof so on sunny days its nice and warm.
Forget about bacteria etc, a little chlorine will sort that out so that
Fife and the Glen would be exciting for everyone alike.
Doubt it will ever come into existence though!
Ignorance is bliss in the eyes of the council at times
Very much so when it comes to doing what the people actually want
Even Stonehaven has a open air pool... come on get on board!
