A HOAX call led to a frantic search of the coastline at Aberdour by lifeboat crews and a helicopter.

Kinghorn RNLI has blasted the person responsible for raising a false alarm about a person in difficulty in the water on Friday.

A call was received at 1.55pm and a rescue helicopter, a coastguard rescue team and lifeboat volunteers from Kinghorn RNLI searched in vain for an hour.

The person who made the call has not been traced.

Kinghorn RNLI press officer Neil Chalmers said, "We are disappointed that people feel the need to make hoax calls to the emergency services.

"The RNLI is a volunteer organisation and all of the crew have who respond to the pager have work and family commitments."

He added, "Incidents like this use precious funds which are raised by volunteers to save lives at sea."
