FIGURES released by ISD Scotland have shown that the number of fatalities caused by cancer in Fife has increased in the last year.

The figures revealed that 1092 people died due to cancer in the NHS Fife region last year.

Murdo Fraser, MSP for Mid-Scotland and Fife, voiced concern over this figure.

"Cancer is responsible for 40 per cent of adult deaths. This is a real problem affecting the Scottish people, not least in Fife.

"The number of deaths from cancer has been a four-digit number for the past seven years; we must put efforts into reducing this fatality rate.

"One of the most effective methods for battling cancer is early diagnosis. I encourage the residents of Fife and surrounding areas to be watchful for symptoms.

"We have to take steps to raise awareness of this threat; anyone can learn about identifying symptoms on the Cancer Research UK website, and anyone can ask their GP about screening programs. Everyone can be active in fighting this issue.

"Simple steps can be taken now to defend against the threat cancer poses to the people of Scotland."
