WE KNOW you’re sick of it and we’re sick of it too: the thoughtless pet owners who insist on treating our streets and parks like a toilet.

That’s why this week the Press is joining forces with Fife Council to launch our ‘Bag It and Bin It’ campaign to tackle this vile nuisance head-on.

Disgust in West Fife at the filth left behind by lazy pet owners is coming to a head, with many readers telling us where this problem is getting out of hand in recent weeks: Football teams in Rosyth unable to kick off before first removing the disgusting mess.

Fife Coastal Path – Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Today, we are asking for your help to fight back against the scourge.

Contact the Press and tell us where this problem is happening. Call the Fife Council hotline on 03451 55 00 22. With your help, we can clean up our streets and parks.

Council environmental enforcement officers are standing by to take your calls and want to know precisely where and when this is happening.

They’ll use your tips to catch the owners who simply can’t be bothered to clean up after their pets and hit them with £40 on-the-spot fines.

The council can serve fixed penalty notices based on the evidence provided by a reliable witness – the offence does not need to be witnessed by a council officer.

Even if a witness is not willing to come forward with a statement, information that helps them to identify an offender and the best time to catch them walking their dog in the park is vital.

The officers could spend two hours in a park and not see any offence being committed, only for the offending dog owner to turn up 10 minutes after they have left.

Councillor Pat Callaghan, executive spokesperson for environment and transportation, explained, “Dog fouling is blighting our communities and is passing on disease to our children.

“If we all do our bit, we can clean up Fife.” Press editor Simon Harris said, “We take a pride in the West Fife community we are proud to serve and we wanted to help.

“We are lucky to live in such a beautiful area and we know the vast majority of our readers want to keep it that way.

"Our ‘Bag It and Bin It’ campaign aims to give that responsible majority the means to fight back, by reporting lazy owners who cannot be bothered to clean up after their pets and so give the council a much better chance of catching them.

“We are delighted to be teaming up with Fife Council on a campaign which can, with YOUR support, make a real difference to our communities.”
