AN Aberdour motorcyclist whose foot was amputated following a road crash was guest of honour at the Dalgety Bay Pushkart Derby family fun day on Sunday.

Kevin Meldrum (50) received a day pass from Victoria Hospital to attend and ‘won’ the race trophy after being pushed round the track.

The keen biker, a Push Kart Derby (PKD) volunteer, had spent months organising the biker cavalcade across the Forth Road Bridge as part of the structure’s 50th birthday celebrations earlier this month.

Sadly, he was forced to withdraw after suffering leg injuries, a punctured lung and cracked ribs in an accident in Aberdour just days before the cavalcade.

His foot was amputated and he’s currently recovering at the Victoria Hospital – but was given a special dispensation to attend the fun day.

PKD organiser Mark Bennett said, “We had a word with the Vic to have Kev outside the hospital where a motorbike escort service pulled up with car.

“Kev didn’t know what was going on and the nurses told him, ‘We’re giving you a four-hour day pass, you’re going to the event’, and he just burst into tears.

“He won the pushkart race – we pushed his wheelchair round the track and presented him with the PKD trophy!” Mark added, “Kev was a godsend at the PKD festival last year – without him and Steve Thomson I wouldn’t have been able to function.

Tribute “He loves helping out and had been looking forward to the event, and this was to pay tribute to all he’s done and help cheer him up.” The fun day was held to make up for the PKD race being cancelled in July, after a lorry ripped a pothole on the circuit’s home straight.

Kids and adults thronged Dalgety Bay Sailing Club to enjoy bouncy castles, slides, bungee runs, food, crafts and community stalls.

Also in attendance were Poppyscotland fundraising support group War-Torn Troops Remembered, which put several eye-catching motorcycles on display – as well as a staff member dressed up as ‘Death’!

‘Captain Jack Sparrow’ and the Black Pearl Bay Pirates kept kids entertained and DJ Scott from Boogie Nights Disco laid on the music.

Mark continued, “We had a fantastic turnout and it was a great day. The kids loved the pirates and when ‘Death’ came in, everybody just froze! It was brilliant!

“Unfortunately we couldn’t have the boat rides as the sea was too choppy, but nobody was really bothered, there was so much there to do.

“A big thanks to the residents who allowed us to fence off a public throughway for the event.”
