A DUNFERMLINE mum and member of the Breastfeeding Network is angry at recent negative comments surrounding mothers breastfeeding their babies in public.

Fay Sinclair (30) of Harrier Court, who is a qualified helper for the breastfeeding support charity, told the Press that the reaction to negative comments from UKIP leader Nigel Farage could deter mums from breastfeeding completely.

She said, “I think the latest issues surrounding mums breastfeeding in public is ridiculous and people are making an issue out of something that is completely normal and natural.

“When people are in a café eating and a baby is hungry – why should the baby not be able to eat as well?

“A lot of mums I work with are nervous to breastfeed in public because they are embarrassed and this negativity is not helping.

“I breastfed both my children in public and never came across anyone who had problems with it.

“Some mums stay up all night to express milk to take out in bottles the next day in fear of what people might think of them but why do that when you have it basically on tap when you are out?

“I think the problem is that a lot of people relate breasts as being a sexual body part but they are for feeding.

“If mums are facing problems when feeding out in public their babies will be screaming if they are hungry and will have to wait for their bottles to be heated up – I think people would rather if their mums breastfed them than listen to them cry!” During a radio phone-in last week, Mr Farage backed the decision of Claridge’s hotel in London to ask a breastfeeding woman to cover up, saying that mothers should “perhaps sit in the corner” when they breastfeed.
